ok guys, i have a question. i love the look of a tailgate band. i picked one up from my buddy recently . its in pretty darn good shape. its off his 89 k5 . it has chevrolet badge bolted on on lower passenger side. anyways, ive done search after search and came up with a few things. first as far as mounting it on my future dually tailgate, is it correct that i can reuse the hardware and such off of a truck band and use it on my k5 band? i see some guys run a epoxy or sticky tape, id be ok with drilling holes if i must. second, i see alot of guys run smooth skins, and or shave handle, run handle flip kit ect. do they actually make a filler plate for the 73-87 handle? its at an awful angle. thats prolly why guys just run a skin. i also have heard that since the k5 band is larger and not notched out for a handle, that the k5 band will sit right over top of handle and you dont have to shave it? it sounds ghettoish, and or shortcut, but i dunno. i hope you guys can point me in right direction. i really wanna keep my stock gate, flip the handle.and run my k5 band.

I don't think you'll have a problem doing that. One problem that does come up is that if your gate is the "older" style (round bottom not folded over seam) the angled sides area hidden by the band is different & requires notching to get the "newer" band to fit...Not a problem if you have a '81 (?) gate. To answer your question, let me ask one first. Do you have any fabrication skills or tools to do metal work on the tailgate ? Anything is possible if you can work metal and weld. If not then have you tried to size it to your tailgate to see where it would sit ?
I am not sure if they sell a piece to fill the handle area when you do a flip kit. Maybe it comes in the kit, I do know the one I did a while ago did not have one and I just fabbed one up to fill the hole.
Keep us up to date and pics of what you decide to do. Good luck.

awesome guys. i really appreciate the advice and pointers. honestly, i dont even have the truck yet nor the gate. haha. im kind of in the part collecting stages until i pick out my next toy. my buddy had the k5 band on his mud truck and i saved it before he killed it. so, im not sure what truck ill end up with. i do know it will be between an 81-87. i know the easiest way is by having it in front of me and trying it out. you guys mentioned several things that ive also read few places . i have some skills and tools and what i dont have i have good friends that will. so im covered there. im more comfortable now after seeing im not alone. now i cant wait to shave the handle up. i personally think it looks snicer than that skin cover. anyway, thanks guys. when i aquire my parts ill post it up asap.....by the way, you guys have any advice on where to get a good quality flip kit/handle relocator kit? i wasnt sure if chris had one and i found 3 other companies that sell em. figured id ask around first. ive heard pros and cons on all of em.

I do not know if chris has a connection for those or not, but if he does I know he does not sell things that don't work right, so buying from chris you at least know that it will work.
