I love this four day weekend every year in mid-January. Friday is Robert E. Lee / Stonewall Jackson Day and Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Would you believe up to about 7 yrs ago, we celebrated Lee/Jackson Day on the same day as King Day? Glad the Va governor separated it for a longer weekend.
Is Virginia the only state that celebrates Lee/Jackson Day? I would think the north would have a comparable Grant / Sherman Day or something.

Must be a southern thing, never heard of Robert E. Lee / Stonewall Jackson Day in Indiana, good for you!!! Days off are days off...

Black85k10, I am in Richmond, well, really Henrico County near Richmond. Today is a state and county holiday. Try going to any county or state office today or Monday, you won't get in anywhere in the Commonwealth.
You are near Harrisonburg, huh? Ever go to the shooting range off route 33 just over the West Virginia border in the George Washington Nat'l forest? Gonna be frequenting that place often this spring/summer on camping trips.
Lee/Jackson Day (from wikipedia):
Lee–Jackson Day is a holiday celebrated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the USA, for the birthdays of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The original holiday, created in 1889, celebrated Lee's birthday. Jackson's name was added to the holiday in 1904. In 1983, the holiday was merged with the new federal holiday Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as Lee-Jackson-King Day in Virginia. This merge was reverted in 2000.
Lee–Jackson Day is currently observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is the third Monday in January. State offices are closed for both holidays[1].

I never heard of Lee/Jackson day and I grew up in Fredericksburg! Oh well. Here in Maine they have another holiday, Patriots Day, which I had never heard of either.

I bet many of you don't know that 15 states observe a type of Confederate Memorial Day. Yep, it's true.
