Doing some updates to the k10. 85' cab and bed swap, boat fuel tank, frame paint, vortec'd 80 350 in the works.pics to come!
-
First pic is first day of having her.cap immediately off. Second pic is putting it to work getting the bugs out. Third pic is adding blocks front and rear. Bad idea. Went from driving like a cadillac to a hay wagon. Front blocks and rear blocks removed with leaf springs. Somewhere around a 4" lift.
-
First pic is my lack of lug nut tightening on the wheel after the leaf spring adds. Second and third are random scrapping photos
-
First pic is the th400 that I got that was from a 84 plow truck frame for $100.it was detonated, full rebuild with mods $700.I really wish i had a pic of where the th350 broke off the np203 from the previous owner not putting in the support arm. This is the time I swapped out my th350 and np203 for the th400 and np205 out of a 84 plow truck.transfer needs adjusted still kind of a pain to get from 4lo to 2wd.warn hubs installed in the front.Second pic is pre 35x12.50x15 with the 31s.third is the discover stt. Fourth is noticing I really had a issue with my cab being rotted.
-
First pic is cab roller. Second/third is the 85 c30 donor cab
-
Finally in the shop waiting its turn.
-
Just seen its not in the build section if someone could move it please.
-
They will move it when they see it. First question, why do you call it hillbilly build ? Looks like you are taking care to do a good job.
Second. So glad to hear that you removed the front blocks, very dangerous and illegal almost everywhere.
Third, nice pics, love to see progress, keep them coming. And finally, can not wait to see what it transforms into.
-
First picture is the dismantling of the truck after a year in waiting.rest of pics are just of removal of parts. Everything went good no major issues. Did not expect the fenders to ne held on with as many bolts as there were. Front ones going onto the radiator support , 4 I believe were a pain.
-
Thanks for the support. Hillbilly restoration not rigging up or other sorts but more of it will look like when its finished.lift blocks were the worst thing I did.I don't recommend it to anyone , it was the 35 dollar lift at the time, that was Hillbilly there.got a lot of the little odds off the front.hoping to get the engine in the stand and bed off next week and get down to frame.
-
Lots of bolts for the front sheetmetal.
It looks like things are progressing well after the year long hiatus. Are you going back with the orange?
Keep the photos coming.
-
It was actually some type of red. I pulled out the front bench and was amazed to see the factory paint compared to the sun fade now. I ran the dash codes but can't remember what they called it. Here is the paint scheme I'm going with, I love these old chevys in the 2 tone green and reds and other misc. But some type off hugger or chevy orange as a main with a white as two tone.I found a pic online but it won't let jpeg download, so I need to figure out change it.
-
Im glad the blocks came out. Looks like your moving along pretty well. I support the two tone idea, its the perfect candidate for it.
-
Started back dismantling the cab and bed off the body
-
More pics of the evening
-
I always wondered why the vents sucked the second winter I owned it.
-
got the interior parts stripped off the cab.bed off,cab to be cut up tomorrow, the cab only had one cab mount holding it on.i knew it was rough but jeez.all 8 bed bolts came off like heck.frame is in great shape cant wait to apply oven cleaner and power wash it. due to budget reasons it seems as if its going to be just a tsc tractor paint black paint job on the frame.hopefully get the engine on the stand tomorrow evening. and finish ripping fuel tanks off and get digging into the blazer tank swap.
-
You sure are making some progress!!
Boy do I remember the days of doing what you're doing, here a few months ago.
Things seem to come apart real quick. You feel like you're getting lots done.
Keep up the good work and keep the pics coming. I love seeing the progress toward bringing one of these great trucks back to full health.
-
I just have to ask, under the driver floorboard on the bottom of the cab (in pic's), is that part of a road sign someone welded/placed there ?
-
yeah it was a two way traffic truck sign haha.i noticed it when i looked at the truck to buy. did find out it has a newer drivers saddle tank and sender, which doesnt matter still going with the blazer tank.its a wonder the gas guage was as accurate as it was the cab was sitting on top of the tank and dang near the sender.also seen someones scab job of brake lines running to the rear, about 6 compression fitting in a 3 foot stretch.hopefully get the engine out today, im going to talk to the engine builder this afternoon and try and set something up, he is commuting from ohio to new jersey on 4 10s as a iron worker and hopefully he can squeeze my motor in on the weekend for teardown and build.i would feel alot better and money well spent going thru the entire motor.
-
Awsome truck! Can't wait to see it when it's done. I've always liked the look of our "square body" chevys, especialy with a lift kit.
-
Some pics of the cab demo today. It brought a tear to my eye
-
I got just two words for ya "plasma torch" ;)
-
i was hoping to get the torch from a buddy but he was using it on one of his projects so it was back to the sawzall. i wouldnt have demolished the cab so much but the scrap yards wont take it without a vin, so this way you can bypass that.im using the vin on the 85 cab i got. 12 cents a pound here in nw ohio.
-
I have done many a vehicle in my life this way. It is way easier to have it in pieces than to hassle with the paperwork for the scrap yard.
-
I'm glad I read this part.
I'll be taking my cab to the scrap yard here in a month or so and had no idea they wouldn't take a cab in one piece unless you had paperwork to go with it.
I'll just cut it up into a half dozen pieces or so.
Thanks for discussing this.
-
Makes it easier to handle by yourself too. ;D
My scrap guy usually comes to me. We trade scrap for parts when I need them if he has them. I needed parts off this old F150 and he brought the whole thing to me so I filled the back with as much scrap as I could dig up for him including my old cab.
-
I hate scrap. Whenever I go there I get depressed cause ill see old chevys, fords and even a few dodges people will scrap and the 3 yards around me won't let you buy back. I seen a old 50s ford stake bed on top of the pile and a 2wd 80 something clean crew cab chevy there. It's sad.
-
it anoyes me when i go to the scrap yards and i see old chevys that are being crushed and rilly hate it when people wont sell them for uunder $1000, but theywill scrap them for less than 300. >:(
-
got the engine out this evening and started ripping the unnecessary off the frame. ran into a issue. the wiring harness of my 78 is really beat up and hacked,a quick on line search about took my breath away with the prices they wanted for replacements. need some help!
-
The 175hp torque monster is out.
-
Yea, new wiring harnesses are not cheap, nor should you buy a cheap one. (you will get what you pay for), My suggestion is try to see if any junk ones are around that you can get the wiring harness from.
-
took the motor to the engine buddy today. got some scares it was a 305 according to him so we ran the casting number.1980 corvette 350 motor?ha ha whatever. under the intake was alot cleaner than expected. major teardown is next week so we pulled off a head to get the big question out of the way.and I'm not sure if the picture shows justice but the piston walls need bored. so seems if the basic freshen up has now turned into project k10 355. he is more into the numbers and what works but next Friday i will post the list of goods to be ordered.
-
The pic is not the best but good enough to get the jist of it. Yea, I would agree, the minor has now turned into a rebuild. But when all is said and done, you will know the engine is a good running engine.
Why did your buddy think it was a 305 without running numbers ? It is really hard to tell the difference by just looking.
-
I'm honestly not sure. every Chevy guy i have ran into says. oh that's a 305 not a 350.so the first time the water pump was out, got some number off by there and confirmed it was a 350. now my buddy who is rebuilding it now first dame thing. oh this is a 305, that balancer on the front was a common 305 thing blah blah blah. if it would have turned out to be a 305 i wouldn't have rebuilt it, but we ran the numbers and confirmed it was a 350. he has a 400 sitting back there i would have acquired and ended putting it up in the truck. some of these guys around me who know it all and can sense when a 305 is present, ha ha who knows.but as off right now no parts have been ordered that's all waiting til next Friday. now I'm on a mission for seats for my cab and i have called on 3 different bucket seats for that thing and there all sold. so I'm about to call on a set near Akron so that's a solid 2 hour drive.holding up progress on the cab.

Here is the engine kit getting ordered tomorrow.
-
got the engine tore down to the block today.cam was warped like heck and a $#@% to get out.bearings showed wear in certain areas and one piston had blow by i think number one or two.some rings were pretty bad.engine kit got here two days ago and monday the block, crank and pistons i ordered get dropped off.ordering a harmonic balancer tonite along with my bolt kits for the motor.
-
the block is done, went up and paid that bill, vortec heads are getting checked today. here's the prices i paid through a local shop not sure if its normal, high or a deal.
thermal hot tank block- 100
final wash -30
bore and hone- 200
r and r pin bushing and fit- 30
magnaflux crank- 25
magnaflux rods- 25
align hone block-75
balance crank drill and machine-220
rods for pistons-75
should start assembling the engine next week. frame has had little progress lately due to a snow plow truck issue taking up 80% of the garage.frame wise got some wire wheeling to do it, put some supports in for the new fuel tank and I'm probably going to buy the rust encapsulator from eastwood corp, apply that and do a gloss black on the frame and be done with it.
-
well after serious debate and checking of the pocket book, project 78 was abandonded.its a shame but for the money and time involved i was able to pick up another truck needing alot less parts and money involved.
-
So what is going to happen to the 78, back burner for now or ?
-
the 85 cab and bed are getting sold which were supposed to get put on my 78 frame, to help offset the costs of the new truck.i was at a good breaking point where i could go with either project.i thought about it for a week or so and when i sat down and ran the numbers in the long run i would save money going with the 86 over building up my 78.the only downfall is i enjoy the round headlights but could always be done in the future. the main issue i ran into with the body swap was not having a place of my own to do it in.being dependant on a Buddy's garage and time and alot of his tools was taking a toll on my patience, 3 hours a week wasn't going to get my 78 done (when he felt the need to say lets work on it). this 86 sierra is fairly clean, has tires on it i plan to sell and with selling this sierras th350,np208 and the tires i should hopefully pay for the majority of the truck and with selling my cab and bed pay for the whole project.i began to dump to much money into it and my 355 project went way over budget tipping the scales at $2800 but everything is new.the issue is i planned on building this, selling my newer silverado which i hate and buying a car, well the truck ain't selling, so i ran into issues there and there was also selling my ATV for a rhino or something.i wish i would have just fixed the rotted cab mounts and kept driving it.
-
some progress on motor and the new 86

got the clean fenders on, radiator support coated, had to order the bolt pieces from to connect the inners.
-
Looking good, looks like you are getting excited to get it in and running again.
-
yeah its coming together, motor is about 99%, then starting on the body.im going to pull the bed off soon, replace the senders while its off check for any other issues or hack jobs from the previous owner.then its cab corners and d.a. d.a and more sanding.
-
What color/type paint on the heads?
-
(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9288/img0026pup.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/338/img0026pup.jpg/)
here is a throw back of my 78.i miss her dearly.
the paint i used on the heads was rustoleum 500 degree aluminum.
-
Thanks!
-
got the bed taken off last week for cab corners and a patch panel on the bed.planning on getting the motor dropped down in soon so we can move it around.just need to come up with a serpentine belt setup from a 88-94 or 95 to get it to run.its been moving pretty slow lately since the weather has broke.
-
the humidity and heat in ohio has been slowing the progress down to a crawl.one cab corner of the two and focusing on selling the other cab to free up space has taken priority.before the weather got hot as africa we were able to get the cab primed and it sold within a week on craigslist for $600. i have been wanting to get the 86s bed primered and sold but the heat is killing those plans. the trans has been painted black and i have been in search of a 88-95 gm parts truck for my 86 project and parts i may be able to purchase for my newly aquired 89 c2500 daily driver(350 5 speed 15.5 mpg!). i am going to look at one today which will give me the serpentine belt setup i want for my 86,then from there ill get brackets powdercoated then ill be ready to drop the 355 in the 86.on a brighter note the 78s rolling chassis hasnt gone to waste it went to a buddy whom is doing all the paint and prep for his 56 apache project.the attempt to sell the 37x13.50x15 boggers that came on the truck also has been a disaster, nothing but bs on craigslist. the tires are 75% if not more tread and retail for 419 otd cheapest and i have them listed with rims for 1000. i have been getting ridiculous offers for these online.so they still sit, hopefully someone with some money will come along so it can pay for my paint!
-
first pic is the cab corner on the 86 replaced, original was full of bondo
second is the cab i was gonna use for the 78 all primered forsale, sold on craigs for 600
third is a pic of the bed being lifted off with the wrecker boom.
-
gcochran223... I do the plug welds from the other side where ever possible then I don't have so much finish work to do on that part of the new cab corner. ;)

-
yeah that would seem to make sense.i dont question my buddy about the stuff cause he gets sassy,as long as its taken sometimes i think i would have been better off taking to someone else on the side!
-
Looks like it is in the right place to get worked on to me. Sometimes you got to wait for good work. I sent my truck away to have the cab redone and all that happened was it got taken apart and left outside, so you are doing better than I did with mine. I ended up going to get mine and doing it myself. Think positive, work completed slow is better than no work completed at all.
-
got the truck outside and pressure washed getting the dirt and grime off it. picking up a 88 350 with my serp belt setup i have wanted for 300 bucks and runs well.i may use that block in my 89. engine should be installed this weekend
-
motor is in! found a donor 88 350 for my serp belt setup, brackets soon to be powder coated
-
header gaskets ordered and arrived already waiting on the ac delco plugs for my vortec heads, autolite wires, plug wire seperators. gonna call summit today about a carb spacer for my truck, not sure if it needs to be fancy cause the vortec intake on the summit 600cfm carb. np205 power washed and 30 years of grease off it, (82 t case), hopefully get that mf in this weekend so i can see how my driveshafts are gonna fit with the 86 being about 3 inches higher than my 78 that i started the project with.hopefully more pics to come
-
truck has been moved into assembly position for the motor, brackets were powder coated gloss black $80, truck did not come with any radiator hardware so i orderd a new fan shroud and all the hardware from the internet. ordered my flex fan a and reverse rotation water pump since i used a 88-95 serpentine belt setup.
-
wow its been a while since i posted on this. well the truck is still in the build process had quite a few setbacks with people helping and i was working like 7-10s at the jeep plant in toledo for a while. lots of setbacks with the first friend of mine helping me disagreed on alot of things so i had to pack it all up and move somewhere else to work on it. on a plus the truck does run and move now. the timing is off a little so that needs readjusted. i moved the truck to my friends shop and he has been doing some work on it when he can, usually doing the stuff i have no idea about. it been coming together slowly ill post some pics i have saved to update this thread.
-
also, that spare 350 i bought or the serp belt setup i ended up giving to my buddy and it had a main bearing going out and the p.o. said it was a good motor lol. people on craigslist are so kind. well updates as of last?? got the th400 shifting correctly, bit the bullet on the half ton axles for the moment and just ordered some 4.56s yukon brand for it. got those installed. once we cracked the diffs it was the 3.08 gears so I'm thinking it should be alot easier on the truck. one ton axles in the future hopefully but its not in the budget as of late. painted the back of the frame. new hitch installed, recently been working on electrical stuff in the cab and the vacuum situation. ordered the 1986 k10 service manual off ebay for $20, that has been a life saver. the p.o. had alot of rigged up stuff under the dash so i have been tracing and clearing that out. while the bed was off i had my buddy fab up some track bars for it. if anything it looks good on there, im not sure how the wheel hop would go with the lift and such on there. the motor part is 90% done other than the vacuum feed to the A/c. also the heater core was bad so that is half tore out to replace that, which is when i found all the rigging up. got a new steering wheel installed. usually have my buddy start it up every once in a while to get the blood flowing, it does have a voltage draw somewhere which hopefully i was able to eliminate once i demo'd alot of the stuff under the dash. its been a slow project but i want to do it cost effectively and correctly.
-
1- engine bay 90% done
2- traction bars
3/4- pics i had taken to order the correct bezels
-
i spent some time in this spot, they had everything rigged up. i gotta fix this, why they cut it out is beyond me, unless they had a double din reciever.
-
1-the new yukon 4.562. left it open in the front and rear.
2-tailgate i bought had the same size opening as on the bed
-
1-heater box rigging i found. they gutted all the engine stuff in the engine bay before i got the truck.had to get info on how this operation works.
2- some of the stereo wiring they had. was easy enough to trace out.
-
http://youtu.be/l5XqMKWI6AM heres a video of the first time it ran. found out the fuel sender and tank were junk it was getting fed out of a can. i dont remember the issue we had i think it was leaking fuel all over why my buddy and the one who built the motor were under the truck.
-
Coming along nicely. You are getting a lot done. Keep it up and it will be on the road soon.
-
yeah i been waiting for a answer i posted in the interior section about where i can pick up vacuum feed but it hasnt got any replies yet. also waiting on that good ole income tax return to drop the bed off to the body guy for prep and paint while im working on the cab stuff. slowly but surely
-
the grille, i may switch back to stock im not feeling this one that came with it.
-
just a shot with some baby tires on it so i can fit it on my car trailer to bring home
-
just the 89 and the 86
