all the progress on my dads build (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,18586.0.html) has inspired me to pull the trigger on my truck for some fresh paint. after going over what i wanted with our local maaco shop, i was excited to hear they could start on it right away. Also i was able to save a couple of bucks if we did some of the basic strip down, so i came home and my brother and I got right to work, removed bumpers, mirrors, drip rails, bezels, grill, and of course my prized emblems.
here it is about ready to go even with a junk set of tires

they're gonna do a lot of spot welding and filling of trim holes, etc, and address some light surface rust on the roof, but over all the body is pretty straight. i picked out a different blue, as i decided to go with just a single stage, and the existing paint was 'Mariner' blue, with a metal flake. the blue i picked out was more of a simple plain deep blue, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed i chose wisely. - Oh, and for those wondering, i am of course keeping the two-tone.
It's been dropped off and should get it back by this Friday, so I'll post pictures the moment i pick it up!!!
(if you can't tell I'm super excited)

" they're gonna do a lot of spot welding "
I never knew Maaco did welding. Take pics before you put everything back on and after, I would like to see the difference if you do not mind.
-
Ha Ha !!
I'm smiling ear to ear. Your excitement is radiating from your post and I'm excited for you too !!
Isn't it a great feeling to have something major done to your prize truck? It sure it.
I can't wait to see pics of it when it's done.
Is it Friday yet ??? ;D

Yea I was surprised to hear that too, but the manager there explained to me that they do all levels of body work from the cheap sprays to show cars.. I guess they're just known more for their budget friendly jobs.. Lol. They've done a pretty good job on both my brothers shortbed and our dads rig, all for a decent price. Besides, we're not show truck kinda guys. We use our trucks. I didn't want to spend big $$$ and then 4X out somewhere and crown the bed with firewood. Anyway, I'll be sure and snap a bunch of pictures

Looking Great. I am excited for you. It going to look awesome. Your whole family has sick trucks

i am very happy with the way it turned out so far!
i think i made a good choice with with the blue... what do you guys think?
He wanted to keep it one more day to finish cleaning it up and clean the dust outta the cab, and i had too much to do today anyway to spend the afternoon re- assembling, (although it was tempting) so I'll get it tomorrow or Tuesday for sure..
-
That truck looks great.
Can't waite to see it with the slotted rims.
-
That looks awesome. I love the blue and white color combo.
-
Love the two tone. The paint sure looks nice and bright.
Can't wait to see it all back together. Ya gotta be happy !!
-
I agree, you made the right blue color choice. It is just deep enough to make the white stand out on it's own. Can't wait to see it all assembled again.
-
Looking great man! cant wait to see it back together.
Theres a Lonely Island song that comes to mind. something about pants...
-
Guys...
I took it back. They're re-shooting it. Nothing to do with the workmanship. They did a phenomenal job, it was the color. Initially, when i first saw it, i loved it. maybe i was just struck by how clean it looked freshly painted, i don't know. but once i got it home a stared at it over and over, i came to terms with the fact that it wasn't the color i wanted. Its a nice color, but not what i was going for. In the sunlight, i think it was too "candy" or something. i wanted a little bit darker blue. It totally comes back on me, and choosing a blue off that little sample booklet. Man those things are deceiving. The shop manager was understanding and agreed to re-shoot it pretty cheap. This time i took my time picking out another blue, and he even had one of his guys mix up a couple variations and shoot some random empty paint cans so i could get a better idea of how each one would look. when it comes down to it, i figured might as well have it done how i want it, otherwise why bother at all? But either way i hope this choice of blue is the right one, cause i can't afford to do this a third time!
Anyway truck is being re-shot now and i should get it back late next week.
i did however get the swampers peeled off and mounted on one of the sets of slot mags, looks good.
what do you guys think?

well good luck with the second color, TSL radials heck yes!
-
cant wait to see it!
-
The shop manager must be understanding, most would be either pissed that you brought it back or thinking what a sucker to pay me twice. Nice of him to reduce the price.
-
Are u going to reinstall the crome trim or just leave it off?

I was baffled by how little he said to re-shoot it. I thought it would be way more. It's a good thing, too, I would have learned to live with it if he didn't hook me up so cheap. Lol. He made it a point to NOT have any influence when I was initially picking out a color. Apparently he's dealt with similar situations but customers have blamed him for a color that didn't come out like they thought it would that THEY picked out..

No trim.! At least no chrome molding. Never liked the stuff. Im not even going with a pin stripe to seprate paints. Drip rails and bumpers and mirrors that's all that's going back on. --oh and of course the Cheyenne 30 emblems.

Will you not even put on any wheelwell molding?
I ask because I see you have bigger tires too, like what I will have on my rebuild.
I'm torn as to what to do about protecting the wheelwell lips from what the tires will throw up.
I'm just curious as to what others are doing about this.
-
Fender flares look kind of stupid, but idk..

Personally I wish there were more options than fender flares or chrome trim. I would like to see some black trim or paintable trim so you could match the colors.

No Wheel well molding either. I'm running naked. My fenders are trimmed anyway for Clearence. I have seen a protective clear film/ tape that Acts a protective barrier for door edges and such. But that may not be heavy duty enough for wheel well applications. Plus it woSuld be a pain to lay onto a curved surface?

Got the truck back yesterday for the second time. I must say Im much happier this time around. More of the blue I was looking for. First thing I did when I got home was throw the swampers/ slot mags on. It looks amazing. Can't wait till Saturday to put everything else back on.
I would love to share but I'm stuck at work all day and can't figure out how to post a couple pics I have on my iPhone. That is possible, right?
-
Yea its possible. I found its easiest if you have the photobucket account, then you can upload to it, then just copy the tags from the photos and open new window to 73-87 and copy/paste back and forth. Its a little more difficult than on a computer but i do it all the time at work from my phone. Theres also a photobucket app that makes it way easier than using their mobile website. I recommended that route!

Now that is smokin hot lookin.
I really approve.
The blue is just the right color, and then you look at the white stripe and and it's a great contrast.
I like that color combination a lot.
-
That truck looks great.
Can't imagine any other rim that would look right on it.
-
From what I can see from the pics, they did a great job of the two tone paint job, keeping a solid line between the blue and white.
-
It definitely looks a lot better with that darker shade of blue.
-
Hopefully I will finally have some time this weekend to finish putting things back on it and take a bunch of pics in good light...
-
Looks REAL sweet! Blue/white like that is my favorite two tone on these trucks.
-
managed to sneak a couple hours with my brother yesterday so we got pretty much everything back on... so here it is, all done!

while snapping these pictures (its first trip out all put together) a guy rolled up and eagerly asked if it was for sale. My reply was only one word: "Nope."

So after getting my dads shell out and put on, i thought I'd cruise CL for a cheap one for my rig. Just to throw on for weekend trips. Found a sweet Fiberglass cab-high Leer for only a few hundred...

Both trucks look great.

Your family do have a nice set of trucks.
-
I love your wheels, could you tell me the details on the rims? Do you know who sells them?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

They are original 70's slot mags. I don't think anyone makes or sells them new. My advice is to try Craigslist or online used wheel dealer ... They're hard to come by, in a 9.75 X 16.5 X 8 lug. So good luck
