Post by: Crob on February 07, 2012, 09:11:24 pm
I have a hole and some cracks in the frame around the rear shocks.  Need some tips and suggestions on repairing it

To fix it right your best bet would be take the bed off. Cutout any rusted or fatigued metal. Make some patches and weld them in. Maybe lay a piece of metal over the repair on the inside of the frame after. Maybe beef up the shock mount hole with a washer.

Is the rest of your frame as rusted as what is in the pic ?

Yes it does have rust like that but it mainly looks like light surface rust

you might wanna invest in a wire brush and drill and inspect the rest of your frame for damage... could be really dangerous if there's other bad spots

As far as fixing, blazin is right.  You will have to remove the infected area and replace with good solid steel.  There is a cheap way and just weld something in there and weld up the cracks, but this will not last. (some people don't care they are just looking to last as long as they have truck)
On the other hand, if you are the kind of person who wants to do it right and make it last, then winky had a valid point also.  You should inspect carefully the rest of the frame for cracks, especially around stress area's where the rust has weakened it.
You did not say what year this truck was, if you find more damage, will it be worth it to you to fix or find another frame ?
