Title: What's this sound?
Post by: Shawn0331 on February 15, 2012, 12:27:14 pm
I was told the ball joints are bad and need to be replaced along with the brakes. I'm doing that this weekend.

What I'm wondering though is, what is this sound?

The sound happens when I'm steering and barley moving.

It's the same sound that the truck makes if you steer all the way to the left/right.

I've attached an MP3 recording of me pulling into a parking lot and parking.

I am at the office and the comp. that I am on right now does not have sound, but from what you described I would agree it sounds like the power steering pump.
The pumps when turned all the way to left or right usually will strain if low on fluid, if you hear the same sound and you are not turned all the way out, most likely is steering pump.

Just got to listen to it, power steering pump, you should flush the system also when you rebuild or replace.

I would make sure that the belt is tight first.

Maybe I imagined it, but it sounds like scraping/grinding.  I had bad balljoints on an old monte carlo that sounded like that and it was the wheel hitting the knuckle.  If you have aftermarket wheels there could be very little clearance anyway.
