Title: oil recommendation?
Post by: joel on February 15, 2012, 03:52:49 pm
What oil should I use? 1986 350 in a silverado. Has right at 80,000 original but sat around for about 5 years. Daily driver about 50 miles. Thanks.

I would go with a good quality 10W-30 if it were me.

I do, it's recommended for those with flat tappet camshafts.

New oil   ;)  Sorry just being a butt this morning.  As zieg said, a good 10W-30 should work.  Always check the range in temp though.  In Ca. I don't have to worry about different oil in winter or summer.

hey bake74, i ran into a lot of trouble with my old jag, temperature difference dictated the oil i used. in extreme hot times, around here in nw tn, we get up to 100 sometimes.  also down to 0 some.  20W50 is what i had to use to keep the pressure up.  I dont have a lot of experience with the 350 and wondered if temp would be a factor.

i'm not saying i recommend this, but this is what i use:

Redline synthetic 10W-30 and either a wix or mobil one filter.  i also hear purolator filters are good.   i use redline because of the sufficient zddp content for flat lifters.  Redline is one of the few oils i could find in 10W-30 that has sufficient zddp content.

Does a stock engine with flat lifters with stock valve spring pressures really need the extra zddp?   i don't know, but why take chances?  Also, considering i don't change the oil but every 10,000 miles, then i think it evens out compared to regular oil.

Flat tappet cam? Yes solid and flat tappet hydrolic cams need it . Can you run without it certainly. Its not just about cams it protects the whole rotating assembly. Its a friction modifier. You could simply use the stp in the blue bottle at wally world or go hard core and buy it concentrated online

I already use purolator filters for everything they're made in Tennessee and I like that.

I ran Dello 15/40 with A/C Delco filters in my 81 C20 for 275000 miles. It definitely gets hot in Texas and this truck pulled a trailer most of its life. I swapped the motor for a fresh one and the main problem it had was exhaust valves and seats were gone. Engine was still clean but the oil was changed every 3000 miles.I ran Dello because that's what we had in our tractors. I've run Castrol GTX in many others and have had good results.

I like Redline and Amsoil, or even Royal purple. Redline seems to eat sludge and other junk way faster than any other oil so I'm going to use it for a year or two on my old motor. Might help it out some.

I run Valvoline VR1 ace oil in mine. I have two of them running it. A stock 350 and a mild build 350. I have to have Orielly's bring in the 10w30 though. All they regularly stock is the 50 and 20w50 for the local dirt track racers. Both of my engines are doing just fine on it.

we run 15w-40 in our 87 454, it rilly worn out but it holds good oil pressure. But on my other trucks i always use 10w-40 with high milege oil from wallmart and eather a fram or wix filter.

I did my oil a month or two ago with 5W-30, oil pressure is pretty low now. I'd agree with 10W-30. That's what I'm going with next change.
