so, i figure for a deeper tone a glasspack muffler should be wide. but how does length come into play? the usual thrush/cherrybomb sort are about 17-23inches long, but i've seen some that are like 10 and super fat.
if i want a deep *glugg glugg* sound what should i do? i've got headers and dual exhaust but i absolutely hate my mufflers, way too TINNY and quiet.

Any exhaust is limited to a couple of things.
#1: If you have a cat converter it will muffle the sound.
#2: If you can increase the pipe size it should give it more of a growl with a glass pack (reduces the back up of exhaust trying to leave).
As far as the long vrs short. If memory serves me right, the longer ones I think are a deeper tone, but realize that glass packs tend to blow out (the internal media) a lot sooner than a muffler type system. As long as your cool with that than best of luck to you and hope you get the sound your looking for.

Ive got thrush glasspacks on my truck (dual exhaust but with stock manifolds) and i believe they are about 18 inches long if i remember right. I have the exhaust ran out infront of the rear wheel and it has a nice deep rumble to it. I went with the glasspacks because they were way cheaper then a conventional muffler. But ive heard a lot of people like the super 44 flowmaster mufflers. Guess they have a pretty nice sound to them.

Lenght plays primarily with decible levels. it doesn't really matter what type of muffler...the longer that muffler thw more tame it will sound. prime example, look at any factory muffler....they are rediclously long for that specific purpose. but just as bake said the glasspack style will give you a deeper tone with more length just won't be quit as loud.

i went with some magnaflow glasspacks, only because they were on sale for some reason at pepboys(i hate pepboys). they were actually cheaper than cherrybombs and comparable to summit's version(plus shipping).
they sound alllriiight. not exactly the tone i was going for but, more truck like for sure.
one question though… there is no flow direction specified on the box or on the muffler. does direction only matter for true "louvered" glasspacks? or perforated core ones too?

All glasspacks have some sort of louver. the easiest way to tell diresction is to look in to the glasspack its self and make sure the louvers are open toward/into the exhaust flow...I know this sounds dumb but it gives a good description. think of the exhaust gas as cheese and the louvers as a grader..... you want to grade the gasses. if the louvers do not protrude at all but only simple holes in baffel with no edges protruding into the muffler then it is not a derectional specific type of glasspack and thus doesn't matter which end is inlet or outlet.

i thought these would have that but, none of the holes have cheese grater-y lips on them that stick up. i'll pull them off and double check but i could have sworn they were smooth cut holes!

I am right there with you, Pep Boys seems to hire anybody and never gives them any good training. Over the years I have had nothing but problems with Pep Boys at several locations, so now I wont even go to Pep Boys even if they are the lowest price, I go somewhere else. Sorry had to vent for a minute. (I hate Pep Boys as much as Vile hates visors. ;D)

This is the exact reason I almost never go to Auto Zone or Advanced Auto....It's hard enough to fix things with oe parts but God forbid you have to fabricate something and ask any of their associates a question...thats when you get "The Look" :o Sorry had to vent as well....

i've found that pep boys is by far the worst in the industry. while they have a LOT of flashy dress up stuff and parts you can normally only get in catalogues, the clerks are a sell-you-whatever-they-can-joke.

wow pep boys sounds like advance auto in my area.i spent a half hour last night getting a hub bearing for my 05 silverado.i was lucky some pregnant 18 year old who probably does more cleaning than helping was there for me. i went with the 8" 2.25 glasspack from summit and had the exhaust stubbed out in front of the tire and it sounded very loud and rappy.no cats. 1978
