Title: frankenstein engine
Post by: mrnda on February 17, 2012, 10:59:50 am
Bought an 84 3/4 pu with a 292.  went to buy some spark plugs and they did not fit.  Took out the existing plug and went to buy some more of those.  Found a website that tells what parts go into vehicles.  I put in the spark plug number and almost all of the engines were of the dodge, jeep flavor---no chevys.

engine block number is 3789404  66-76.  Head gasket needs to be replaced,  do Dodge parts fit on Chevy?

The plugs you purchased were probably the small 5/8ths plugs that have tapered seats.  The plugs you took out of the engine are probably the larger plugs which require a 13/16 inch socket and have flat seats with a washer.

If the engine is from the sixties and early seventies, it has a pre-smog head and requires the larger plugs.  You should need AC Delco Plug R44XL.  Also, Champion 4N14Y plugs will work.

Spark plugs of various brands can be used in different makes of engines.  I use AC Delco in my GM engines.  Some people prefer Champion spark plugs in Mopar engines, but they will also work in others.  Aside from the swapping of different brands of spark plugs, no you cannot use Dodge parts on/in your Chevy engine.

dont let them upsell you on some 6$ iridiumchromiumplatinumoxidesidium plugs. the plain janes, properly gapped will work fine with what you've got.

Thank you everyone, i never go for the upgraded items, I prefer maintainability and stock for ease of maintenance and upkeep.  Thank you for the advice, and shared knowledge, I feel much better going forward.
