Title: White interior - where do I find replacements?
Post by: 79camper on February 25, 2012, 04:28:52 pm
Apparently white interiors were rare. I cannot find seat covers or door panels anywhere - looked at  , year one, this site's store, lots of google searches, but nothin... And, I really don't want to paint my plastic parts. Any experience with white interiors out there? I have a guy that's done a few interiors for me, but he's expensive... Might have him do my seat, but like I said, I really don't like vinyl paint.

White sounds interesting, never knew they existed in the square bodies.  My 72 K20 Cheyenne had a white/green interior... Had the checkerboard pattern on the seating wrapped with white vinyl that was embossed with the same pattern on the white door panels...

If you don't want to use the vinyl paint on your trim parts then you will probably only find the them as a NOS part.

Have you gone to the Chevrolet dealer and asked for them to search for it?  It's probably discontinued, but they can do a dealer search to see if it's on another dealers parts shelves.  You should also get the GM part numbers for all the parts you're looking for from the dealer and search the internet using the part numbers. (FYI: the casting number on the part and the actual part number are often times different).  Use the GM part numbers for your internet search, ebay, etc.

There are NOS only dealers all over the country and chances are one of them has the white door panels. If you do find a set, don't be surprised if the price is two to ten times what you think they should cost.

My '74 K-10 came with a white interior from the factory. When it came to refurbishing the seat and headliner, I was fortunate to have a local upholstery shop that didn't charge an arm and a leg.  I used vinyl paint on all the plastic parts and they still look good after 10 years.

I agree, I do not like vinyl paint either.  But dying the pieces I have done that with great results.  They make vinyl dyes that I have seen last for 20+ yrs if done right.  Now I personally have not done it but know several who have used vinyl paint and have seen the results and they are very good looking, I would assume like anything that prep work is the key.

Zieg85, white and green houndstooth would look sweet, I wish the houndstooth pattern had stuck around a little longer. I have the interior all torn out, except for the seat (which is covered), so i took a pic of one of the door panels - I'll try to get it posted. Door panels have typical sun burn, so one of my concerns about painting it is the finish texture - I'm afraid the top will be too smooth where the plastic has worn down.  I will definitely have the seat recovered by my interior guy. I'm missing the headliner, I don't even know if it came with one, so I might have one made as well.  One thing I thought about doing is having the door panels covered with the same vinyl as the seat.

Otherwise, you guys have given me some confidence in the durability of vinyl paint.

I sell seat covers, and can get them in any color you want, but they aren't returnable/refundable.  They aren't listed on the site due to the multiple options.  I may try and put the generic ones on there eventually though...

This is the available colors:

http://acmeauto.us/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=4388

These are the styles:

Unless your factory panels are junk, painting them is your best option if you are restoring it...  And if you don't want to paint it, your will be out of luck as no aftermarket company offers white as a color.

Thank you Captkaos, that 4062 white looks pretty close. I'm going to look at the site now - how hard would it be to put together a "complete package", excluding door panels and carpet. I need a headliner, and all the pillar trim in white as well. I was planning on having my interior guy glue matching vinyl on all the exposed metal in the cab, but I'm open to options that keep me as close to factory as possible.

As in glue vinyl to the metal dash, ash tray, glove box, etc.?

Please don't let someone glue this stuff in your truck.  You will regret it (or someone else will) later.

Yep, I regretted even the thought of glueing (sp?) vinyl to my metal as soon as I typed it.  I'll be buying a headliner kit.

I worked at a Chevy dealer in the late '70s and don't remember white interiors except for the Spirit of 76 Edition and I would assume they are about as rare as hen's teeth. But then, most of the trucks sold in my area were working farm trucks so not much demand for white!

I found a link on GM heritage's website that goes through all the options for every model, but white interior isn't even listed for 79. However, it is listed on my service parts identification tag (XMM1 mystic custom vinyl). I wonder if there were any other colors you could have custom ordered. It's a pretty cool tool if you're restoring an old chevy. I figured out that my exterior was special two-tone midnight black with mystic silver, I thought it was black and white, but I was wrong...

Here's the link if anyone is interested in using it - you can enter your year and pick what model you want details for.  http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/docs/Chevrolet-Trucks/1979-Chevrolet-Truck.pdf

I have the remains of the a white interior in my garage upstairs. In fact I will be using some of the pieces from the headliner for my 74 because I have a few cracked pieces. The white was more of an off white/almond but not quite almond. Hard to describe but white nevertheless. You should have no problem using a good Plastic & Vinyl paint/dye for your trim pieces. Clean them good with fantastik and rinse them with hot water. Use the recommended primer or adhesion promoter and paint them in a warm dry environment. Take your time and you will be happy.

Let me know if this comes up. This is not my truck, I've got the interior all torn out of mine, but this is from a 79 that's selling on eBay (looks nice...). Anyone know how to upload pics from an iPad?
