Title: Tonneau Pics
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on March 02, 2012, 02:24:57 am
I'm thinking about buying this tonneau for the truck.

Any of you guys have any pics of trucks with covers like this installed?  I'm just curious how it will look with the lines of the truck.

I like how the truck looks way better without the toolbox, but I need someplace to put stuff and keep it dry and clean from time to time, so I either need a toolbox or a tonneau.

If anybody has any info on this particuar cover, like does it cover the stake pockets (I want that)  so it will cover the holes left from the toolbox.

I have that one installed on my 75 C10 long bed.  I don't have any regrets with it.  I'll post pictures soon as I can.  I just got an iPhone so I need to try it out.

With and without the toolbox:

Plus it's an old toolbox and looks like it.  Figure I'll be spending about the same for a soft tonneau of the toolbox I'd like to have.

I likes it better with the toolbox when I had the old wheels on it, but I dont think the toolbox looks as good with the new wheels.

There is no security with that tonneau cover...keep that in mind.

I have an Access Laredo cover on my truck. It is a soft roll up cover so there are no snaps. it rolls up and out very easily. Easy to install and no tools are needed to adjust it. After I having this cover and others like it; it is my first stop when I buy a truck. With my last work truck It had a locking tailgate and the tailgate must be open in order to get the cover open. So it was secure without someone obviously cutting it. With snaps someone can just open it up and see what they want. It sits even with the bed inside of the bed rails. So it won't cover up stake pockets, I don't have stakes pockets, if I did I would want to some how water proof them. The entire cover just clamps on, so there is no permanent damage done. I also added weather stripping around the tail gate of my last w/t to keep water and dust out. I do recommend using something on the tailgate to prevent the paint from wearing where the cover comes into contact. I don't know the product name but it is basically a clear vinyl. I believe it also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Here is a good video on the cover. I'm not recomending the dealer, I don't know them. I bought mine from a local dealer. I did recieve good customer service from access when I ordered the cover. They had called me to know that it would take a little over a month as they had to make the cover as they don't generally stock them for older pickups and asked if I was okay with the wait and to verify the vehicle and bed size etc. The quality also is great all around. I think the price was just over $400

I shouldn't be leaving anything in the back other than to take it where it's going.  I just want something easy to use that'll keep it dry.  I found out already that without buying a hard tonneau that hangs down over the sides it won't be lockable with any cover.  I need to figure out how to make a locking tailgate somehow without butchering the gate.  There are some ABS covers but they are textured black, I dont like it.  and the fiberglass ones are heavy and too expensive.

1980c10:  Good idea on the vinyl, but I have a SS protector on it, so I'll be all set there.  Love how the cover looks on the truck too man!

Captkaos:  Good link

I think I got what I needed fellas, Thanks for all the input!   I like the way it looks and ought to be buying one in a month or so.

My brother in law in Michigan has one on his 06 dodge 2500.  He bought the truck new and went out and bought the cover.  I actually was there at the time and helped him install it.  It is a well made cover and he has not had any complaints about it yet that I know of.

Says it has a J45 system.  is that where the cover just kind of hooks into place like a ziploc bag?  my brother in law had one like that 5 or so years ago, and I liked it.  I cant find any info on a j45 system.

For myself after having a roll up cover I couldn't get a cover where you have to put braces in or push in the edges. It just seems like a lot of extra steps. Also where would you put the braces when you have the cover rolled up? I wouldn't want them sliding around the back. I had a roll up cover on my last w/t and the back was loaded with tools and parts. I rolled it back and forth several times a day and just wouldn't want the extra steps. The access cover or any roll up cover rolls up with the braces and just velcros down the side. I've never actually had the extang type so it ay be simpler than I realize though. Another point to think about is the bows on the extang cover are a different look than the flat bars of a roll up cover.

Side & Rear View of my cover.  I have not installed a locking latch yet but I also do not use the truck for work either.

Eventually I am going to add power locks to my door locks. When I do I was thinking I would add a door lock seleniod for the tailgate as well, either a pin or latch of some type and will put them on a remote. I think all truck makers should add a power lock that locks with the doors on a truck; it makes sense to me anyway.

78 Chevyrado, I thought your truck looked sweet before, but with the toolbox gone and tonneau it might be better.

I like it!  That looks good!

That makes too much sense.  That's why they havent made that yet.   :)

I used to like the toolbox as it made the truck look shorter, but the big wheels also make it look shorter so the raggedy toolbox looks out of place.  It's all faded and won't lock at all anymore, its so old and worn out.  That toolbox actually came on the 87 I used to have that I bought in 2003.  lord knows how long it was on there before I got it.  It looks sportier without it, and with the new wheels.  I really don't put much in the bed these days, if I haul something I put it on the trailer, cuz nobody cares if it gets dented and skint up.  heck, the 16ft car hauler I have only cost new about $300 more than the color matched spray in bed liner I want, so using the trailer wins.  lol
