Title: New rims didn't fit my 87 Suburban 2500 4x4

1987 GMC Suburban 2500 4x4

Can anyone help?

Currently I have 16 x 6.5 (8 Lug)rims on my Suburban 235/75/16. The current rims look to be stock.

Two weeks ago I ordered new 16x8  (8 LUG) steel rims and new center caps (two open and two closed) . The guy that took my order told me that they would fit my Burb. When I got the rims, I looked at the center caps and they looked kind of big. They were shipped to my house.

So I started doing some measuring and discovered that the center caps had a diameter of 4.25 inches. When I measured the axle near the locks I observed that it was only about 4.75 inches in diameter for the front. I went ahead and measured the rear and it was the same 4.75 inches as well.

Then when I put the rims up to it I doscovered that they were 5 1/8 in diameter. THE RIMS WERE TOO BIG!!!!
Bummer, I'm in the process of sending everything back.

What did I do wrong?

Should I be looking for something specific in the measurements or shouldn't the rims match up. Any suggestions or advice would greatly appreciated.

Are you saying that the rims you had on there were 4.75" holes and the new rims had 5 1/8" holes ?  Did you check to make sure the bolt pattern fit ?
Just because the hole in the rim was bigger doesn't mean they wont fit.  You need to check the bolt pattern to see if they will work.  Can you snap a pic of what you are talking about in case I am off in what I read of your post.

Most if not all aftermarket rims, the center hub hole is much larger than stock.  A couple of reasons is the lug pattern is shared by older Fords and Dodge which their centers are larger as well as center caps take up space.  As long as the rim will bolt up you should be fine.

Hmmm,  OK, maybe I don't need to worry about this then. It did look like the lugs would fit. I think I just assumed the Hub should fit snug as well, which it doesn't.

I will take some pictures, and post them just to make sure. It just seemed like nearly a half inch would be to much space though. But I'm still not sure about the center caps that I also ordered. The whole cap fits through the hub opening.

I will post pics soon!

That will work just fine. Like it was said before, all aftermarket rims have the hub hole over bored. These wheels are centered up by the angled seat on the lugs.
