Title: Need some help with door components
Post by: 74GMC on March 25, 2012, 08:37:22 pm
I now realize how much time is put into getting your doors working properly. I recently replaced my passenger side door with a aftermarket one. I used all my old components except the door rod clips, this is what I'm having trouble with. The door rod clip that attaches the inside door handle rod to the mechanism for opening the door keeps slipping off the rod. I've put the clip on a few times now and after about ten or so times using the inside door handle the clip slips off. Then the rod falls off and the door doesn't open. I've tried bending it more so it clips on good but it doesn't seem to be working. Not sure what to do. I've tried putting lock wire through the clip and rod but still doesn't work.

Does anyone have some suggestions to fix this?

Here is a pic of the clips I'm using.

I am not going to be much help here, (actually never tore into that part) but my mind thinks that the rod should fit into that clip to where it can not just slip out, do you have a pic of your set up, rod and clip, maybe we can see something that you can not.  (never hurts to have a second pair of eyes on something, different people tend to see things differently).

Yeah I agree I'll try to get a pic of it together, once the weather warms up a bit. Pretty cold this week.

Using a plier try to bend it in a little towards the middle so that it pinches the rod better. They are tricky; I got mine on to stay just by trying 20 or so times.

Not promoting this idea necessarily, but I just bent the arm of the door latch a little so the rod was captured against the back of the door and couldn't come out.  I hated those little clips!

Patience is a virtue, my friend.   ;D  After the 10 time I might have gone somewhere and broke something and then came back to it.   >:(

Are you seating the clip fully after you get the rod through?

Yeah, I've seated the clip fully and can see that it catches in the hole. I've also tried to bend the clip a bit so it catches better, that seemed to work but only for a 10 or so times using the door handle. Do you think cutting the the little notch on the clip more would help it to seat better?

The clips I have are rounded with a tab on it to keep it from moving.

Yes those clips stink! I had the same problem on my 91. I honestly got pissed off and just used a zip tie around the rod and clip as tight as I could. It held for a year or two before I sold the truck. Not the best solution... just thought I would throw it out there.

I ended up using a zip tie to temp fix the door clip issue, seems the parts stores around here either don't know what I'm talking about or only carry the square clips.

Thanks for all the help.
