Title: Stubborn Flywheel
Post by: drtbikkid on March 28, 2012, 12:54:49 pm
after removal of trans and tranfer case, (im a first timer and giggered if you guys were'nt kidding about the weight of those things!) i removed all flywheel bolts but cannot remove it. i tried wiggling, tapping, prying (nothing too agressive because my rear main seal is actually still good and didnt want to do damage) but nothing would make it budge.

is it a press fit or something? i ve had numerous people say "i should just slide right off". has anyone had this issue?

is it safe to try to go at it with a puller if i can find one large enough to screw to the clutch holes?

ive come so far! this thing is fighting me at every step.

i would greatly appreciate any input.

I had one that tight and right or wrong.... I'll probably be chastised for safety or lack of but... I checked to make sure the fan blade wasn't resting on the shroud and I hooked the battery back on and bumped the starter which was enough to break it loose from the crank.  Now I'll sit back and be corrected....

Make sure to pull the power wire off the distributor...

Just rock it back and forth with two prybars on bolth sides between the block and flywheel.  Put two bolts in loose so it dont fall on your foot.

Or face.      ;D

I've had stubborn ones before. It did take a bit of persuading and prodding to loosen it up and "walk it off" the end of the crank.

^This^

Be careful with it too, they are heavier than they look.  :o

Spray a little PB Blaster around the flange the night before.

Couple of bolts in lose, and give it some good swats with a dead blow plastic hammer, or a block of wood and a 3 lb hammer.
