Hey guys I forgot to put fluid in the trans before I started the truck yesterday. I didn't drive out or put it in gear.I haven't had time top work on it today and was wondering if I messed up the trans by not putting fluid in before I started the engine? Fresh build engine old trans hi said it ran fine till he got to the gas station and over heated the motor, so sounds like it worked beforeI got it.my thinking here is that the pump want turning so I should be ok, but idk

 Hi how long did the truck run with no fluid in the transmission  ? Was it bone dry ? I had a do it self customer years ago change his own transmission filter and on a 78 k 20 with a turbo 400 and he put the plastic filter extension in backwards ,the shift linkage put a hole in the extension it burned the pump out and never got off the jack stands.

Dang...bout 20mins bone dry and couldn't be at a worse time. I just got a job as a maintenace manager. Well is there anything I can do besides putting trans fluid in? You think I burned up the pump?

Any time the engine is running the torque converter is turning so is the pump in the trans.

Ok so am I looking at buying a whole new pump or just the internal gears?

Not to be mean let's hope your maintenance job requires you keep track of what you r are doing. No one can measure the damage that may have been done so just fill it up and drive it. When it goes it goes.

Yeah if I knew that id burn the pump up I would of put fluid in... not a tranmission guy ya know

Well I burnt the pump up. Now my choice is either get the pump replaced for 200 or get the 700r4 in the yard rebuilt. Guys how hard is it to replace the th350 trans pump assembly? Does it require speacial tools? If not I could just do it myself and be done with it.

Well I goggled how to replace the pump so ill do it myself. Doesn't seem that hard to do so ill give it a shot. Anyone have any advice besides putting fluid in before I start the engine? Like do I need to pour some fluid in the pump or anything before butting the new pump in the trans?

It's pretty easy and you can make a homemade puller very easily

Ok from what I gather id need a couple 3/8 screws with 16 count thread. Question is if I need a puller to get it out. Won't it be crazy difficult to get back in? Just my thinking. Or would it be simple as tapping it. Down into place?

It's not a 350C is it? Just make sure the filter is out and if it's a C remove the TCC solenoid. Use a distributor wrench and thread the bolts through it and use it like a slide hammer. It will pop right out. As far as going in, as long as you lubricate the seal with vaseline it'll go in easily. A couple of long bolts with the heads cut off and a screwdriver slot will act as alignment dowels

Yes it is a lockup 350 trans. Curious why would I need to remove the solenoid? I thought I could wire up a lockup switch like the 700 uses. So your saying take the filter out when I remove the pump?

If you try to remove the pump without removing the solenoid you will break it. Also if you get a replacement pump, look at the back of the pump before you install it. Often they come with only one or two bolts holding it together and you need to transfer over the ones from your old pump.

If I remember correctly somewhere I read that the nonlockup and lockup pumps are different. Or is that just the torque converters? Id hate to buy a pump for a nonlockup converter.

Well guys I put more fluid in the trans and its all good. I took it for a test drive and all seems to be good! If I can get it to idle right its going to have a nice lope to it.
