have a stripped 454 block out of a 98 chevy. blocks been stripped work was gonna toss it, so i took it figured might do something with it. was curious if the blocks any different to a carb block, or can i just bolt a set of heads intake carb etc... to this engine and run it, thanks.

The 98 454 is a GEN VI 4bolt main block, with a roller cam. Gen VI blocks are from 96-2000, and they made some improvement from the Gen v block. The Gen VI doesn't have the provision for a fuel pump, so you will have go the electrice pump route. Yes you can use the Gen IV heads on the Gen VI block, It just takes a special head gasket to make it work. Cometic head gaskets C5335-066. I have a 1999 GEN VI 454 bored +.030, 11:8.1 compression, with 1974 781 heads, that have been worked, the block has been machined to accept a 4.375 crank from a 2002 8.1 liter BB. The engine puts out 625hp & 685TQ all under 5500 RPM, it is a TQ monster. It is in my 66 Chevelle.

Thanks for the info I wanna put it in my 77 shortbox I Ned something bigger than a small block to turn my 44s. And they were throwing it out so I figured I'd take it and build it over time. The other question I had is where do you suggest to buy the parts like heads intake and everything else and other than the fuel pump and head gasket is there anything else that's really different ? Thanks

I would look on craigslist for a set of heads. Try and find a set of 049's or a set of 781's. They are the better GM heads. 049's. I see them all the time around me. They are getting harder & harder to find in auto salvage yards but they are out there. I just bought a complete 454 engine from a salvage yard for $650 . They told me it was out of a 74 truck. So I ran the casting numbers and it ended up being a 1970 454 I believe it is a LS5 :D It will be going into my 87 !!!!!!

I know the Mk4 heads will not fit the GenV block without water leaks. The GenVI was supposed to be an acceptor of all BBC heads made to that point.
But yes the 049/781 heads are an excellent choice for any <500ci build. I know 1st hand what the 049s will do with L88 valves, and port work to match.
Jegs is where I get my OTS go fast parts.
