Title: Last night's Tornado or Very Strong Straight Line Wind
Post by: Jason S on April 14, 2012, 09:33:35 am
Everyone is okay.  Most of the damage was to the house.  There was a covered patio on the back of the house, most of it is now in front of the house.  Lots of roof tiles broken or dislodged all over.

It could've been much worse, but nevertheless it sucks...

The tile and roof decking is gone from over the bedroom. So we have subsequent water damage too.

Close call with the propane tank.  I had it sitting on sawhorses so that I could refinish it.  That thing could've done a lot of damage

This, I suspect, is the result of a fence panel that gone blown away.  I guess the GMC saved the Tahoe a lot of damage.

Thanks, Vile. Not much to do now until insurance people come.  I'm getting transferred out of here in a little over a month, so this just throws another iron in the fire.

Sad thing is I never heard the thing...

That really sucks, but very happy to hear your family is ok.  Maybe your home insurance can cover the damage to the GMC as well.

Bake74: Hopefully insurance will cover it.

However, since the paint is about 10 years old, it's probably going to require a full repaint.  So I may have a rebuild posting in the coming future...

It's happening again...  Should be here about 12:30 - 1:00 CST...

I'm generally pretty even keeled, but really WTH?  I guess I'll be sleeping under the ground again tonight...

Jason, I hope you and your family don't see anymore damage out of these storms.

I don't envy you guys that live in the tornado prone areas this time of year. I don't know how you can sleep at all. Living in the northern part of NH I am jealous of the nice weather everyone gets but have always said that we have little to worry about with stuff like tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes. When it comes to storms that can destroy everything I would rather have 6 months of winter listening to my furnace spend my money.

It's sad to see such a nice truck take a hit like that but at least it was minor in comparison to what could have happened.

Good luck riding the storms out and let us know that everyone is ok when they are over.

Thanks for taking the time to post, and that you and your family are OK  ;)

Once you've been through something like that you'll always have a different perspective
when you see the clouds rolling in, I spent a good part of my life in MN. IA, & MO.
By far the worse was MO. I'll carry those experiences to my grave.

Kudos to the GMC for taking one for the Tahoe !

I want to thank everyone for the well wishes.

Saturday nights storms weren't as severe in southwest oklahoma, nothing like the previous night. By the time they hit us they had diminished in intensity. This morning, I found that the wind had blown some of the previous nights debris around. Overall, it could have been much worse.

In contrast, Saturday nights storms were particullary bad for northwest Oklahoma with 5 reported deaths.

Good to hear that you are alright. Sorry to see the damage. The May 3rd 1999 F5 almost got me.

3 WEEK UPDATE

Apparently the landlord's have been very busy...

Here are some photo comparisons of right after the storm and how things currently look.

Back yard looking toward the driveway on 5/4/2012. Photo shot from about where the green GMC was in previous photo.  See the maroon doghouse? Notice the missing fence panel.  There is a pool back there...

I received a call from one of the landlords, it went to voicemail.  She hasn't seen the damage herself, but she was "concerned about the pool" and wanted me to take a sample of the pool water in to have it tested. She didn't want algae to start growing...  I was about to boil over after I listened to that message...
>:(                I seriously believe she expects the pool to be opened, cleaned and operational when we move out.

A portion of roof removed by the storm on 4/13 allowed a lot of water in, the carpet in the master bedroom was soaked as was the ceiling.  I had told the landlords it was soaked when I notified them about the storm damage.  We had fans blowing air across the carpet.  I told them again a few days later about the carpet and ceiling.

As I'm being transferred, we had a week long househunting trip that had been already scheduled for 4/16 thru 4/20.  After we returned, I told them again about the carpet.

On 5/2/2012, the landlords finally got a carpet crew out.  On the voicemail I received earlier, the landlord said that here husband had looked at the carpet (he did), but didn't find anything wrong.  I guess he can't smell.  The carpet crew pulled up the carpet and found part of the pad was still wet. I should've pulled the carpet and pad. I would have if I had known that this would be ongoing... >:(

Even though most of the carpet and pad in the room was soaked through, the carpet crew cut about a 6 - 8 foot wide strip of the pad out and set the fan.  It's 5/4/2012 and the fan is still going...  The carpet crew is going to replace the cut out section of pad (at some point).  Funny thing (though it's not my business), when the insurance adjuster looked over the room and water damage, he said he would allow money to replace the carpet and pad...

Here is the ceiling as of 5/3/2012.  Not horrible, but you can tell there had been water on it.

I have been a landlord. Granted, the house I leased out never experienced damage like this; however,  I would never expect my tenants to have to deal with the debris or danger of roof tiles sliding off the roof, etc..

If rolls were reversed and I was the landlord in this situation, I certainly wouldn't have the nerve to tell my tenant that they needed to take a pool sample (even though I was dragging my feet on house cleanup and repairs).

We close on our new house on May 21st so this should all be over very soon and I won't have to deal with this nonsense anymore.

Glad safe:) wife says we are under a tornado watch now... but I hope it isn't anything like a couple weeks ago. Dallas and sorrounding areas got hit with a baray of diff tornados.
