Title: 355 Tested And Ready To Go In
Post by: ChaseDale3and8 on April 18, 2012, 02:13:41 am
It's been a while since I've been on here, but I wanted to post the latest progress for my '86 K10 short bed. The stock 305 and clutch are about to give up the ghost. I built this small block for it almost 4 years ago. Was saving it to install when I could do a total frame off, but that isn't going to happen for quite some time since I have a lot of other things going on right now. I have to keep this truck up and running since it is also used as a 3rd vehicle when needed, and HAS to be dependable. I haven't driven it daily for the last 3 years since the 305 and clutch are in such bad shape.

So, I dragged this 355 that I built for it out of the mothballs and pretty much have it prepped, tested, and ready to go in now. This video is actually the 3rd start up since I had some fuel leaking at the fittings and at the pump on the second try after I changed carbs and lines out since I thought that I had a problem with the Holley that I originally put on it. And....NO, I didn't let it idle! It has a flat tappet cam! Specs are as follows:

4 bolt main 0010 350 block bored .030 over
Factory forged steel crank, .010/.010 (1182)
PM forged GM rods set up for floating pins
Speed Pro 2VR pistons
"487" GM heads,  ported, polished, 2.02/1.60 S.S. valves
Complete Comp Cams valvetrain and 1.52 roller tip rockers. 268 XE Comp cams flat tappet hydraulic cam. 224@.050/230@.050 duration, .477/.480 lift.
Hedman ceramic coated 1 3/4" large tube headers.
GM Performance Parts dual plane intake manifold.
Carter AFB carburetor.

Now it's a matter of doing the hard part and getting it put in! Hope this video works! Enjoy! ...Joe

Welcome back, sounds like a good running engine, so when do you plan on swapping out the engine ?

I'd like to start on the tear down this weekend. I don't work as fast as I used to so this may take me a while to get done! I'm also going to have to do it in the driveway since I have the garage FULL of other projects including a 1981 Z28 Camaro. I'll try to keep updates on here. They sure don't care over at 67-72chevytrucks.com. Not even ONE reply on the 73-87 page after I posted the same thing there!

I've noticed the same thing about the other site. I get a lot more feedback and help through this site.

Looks like a pretty nice motor. Good luck with the swap!

Well I am not on that site.   ;)  I have found that this forum is by far the friendliest and helpful on the net so far.

Thanks for the replies guys. This site does seem to be a whole lot better when it comes to getting a reply! A whole lot friendlier crowd over here for sure! I guess you have to be in a certain "click" over there for them to even give a dang. That is one of the main reasons that I haven't been on their site for close to a year. I'm not going to waste my time putting up a post if they only look at it and have nothing to say.

I'm running a 4-speed manual trans, so I don't have to worry about stall speed on a converter. This cam should pull good vacuum for the power brakes and air conditioning, which still works but really needs to get a once over and a recharge if I'm going to use it again.

Pics of the Z28 Camaro are on photobucket.com. My screen name over there is the same (ChaseDale3and8)here is a link to try, hope it works: http://s663.photobucket.com/albums/uu353/ChaseDale3and8/Z28%20Build/

The Z28 is another long term project that I picked up about 3 years ago as a rolling chassis. It sure got some rough treatment during it's life, but so far hasn't been all rusted out like so many others that I've seen. I already have a 383 stroker and Turbo 400 built and ready to go in as soon as I get everything cleaned up and painted/ and or powder coated.

This old K10 of mine is my parts hauler for the Z28, and my general work horse around here. I used to drive it daily until 3 years or so ago, but the 305 and clutch are so weak now that it needs some attention, so the Z28 has to be put to the side temporarily. Once the K10 is back up and running again, I'm planning to jump back on the Z28 to hopefully make some more forward progress! ....Joe

The tear down has begun. Haven't gotten a lot done since these pictures were taken Sunday since I have been putting in a lot of overtime at work lately. I'm hoping to get the 305 uprooted sometime this week, Sunday at the latest. I have also changed my mind as to which 355 I'm going to install (I have 2 of them). The one that I've decided to install is basically the same as the one in the video posted previously with the exception of a cast crank. It also is a fresh .030 overbore 0010 block, but with 2 bolt mains. It has forged TRW flat top 4 eyebrow pistons, a Comp 280 Magnum cam, and ported and polished 993 casting heads topped with a Summit dual plane intake and Holley 600 carb. I decided that I put so much work into the first one, and that it was such a nice piece that I want to save it for an eventual frame off some day. For now, this one will do the job, and other than the cam, crank and 2 bolt mains is basically the same build. I'd bet that power output between the two would be less than 5 h.p.. Video of this one is also on photobucket. It kind of startled me since it stated right up in the test I did on it. Thought that it was going to jump right off the stand!

Progress has been non existent this week with all the overtime that I've been pulling at work. Going to try to continue Sunday with at least getting the 305 out. My next door neighbor stopped me this morning and offered up help yanking it out if I need it. I might just take him up on that! I'd like to clean up that nasty engine bay a little bit before slipping the 355 in. This project may take a little bit longer than what I'd originally planned, but I know the results will be worth all the effort. It's going to be GREAT to have some muscle under that hood! I'll get some new pictures posted as it progresses.

This seems to be contagious.  ;D

Years ago I was just going to paint my K10...Now the only thing that I have left of my original truck is the axles, radiator support, transmission, and steering column, and some small detail pieces.

Good luck with your engine this weekend.

Okay guys, I have everything disconnected and have made several attempts to pull the engine out with NO LUCK! The giggered thing seems to be seized to the transmission somehow. ALL the bell housing bolts are out, and the inspection cover is off. I hooked the shop crane chain hook up to the center hole on the carb plate on the intake manifold, and it lifted it UP fine, but I can't get it to break loose from the transmission!Tried hooking up to the other two holes with the same result. Tried wiggling it with it lifted up, twisting it, didn't matter. She won't budge! I'm about ready to hook up my John Deere lawn tractor to the front of the shop crane and give it a yank! Don't want to tear something up trying to get it out though. I haven't pulled an engine from a manual trans truck since my last one that I had back around 1995. I grew up around this kind of stuff, I'm 46 years old now, and know my way around these old square body trucks. I've owned so many of them that I can't even recall how many over the years. heck, my brother and I used to be able to strip one of these trucks down to the frame in less than 8 hours back in the day, so I'm no stranger to them, but this one has me stumped! This was SUPPOSED to be a simple engine swap like I've done a hundred times before, but it has turned out to be a nightmare! I just can't figure out what the heck the hold up is since I should be able to pull it by myself without any issues! I sure named this truck right when I bought it and started working on it. I call it the Blue $#@% for all the trouble she gives me EVERY time I put a wrench to her! Could I possibly be overlooking something? Should the trans be in reverse gear, or in neutral? I currently have it in reverse. I have always pulled them apart at the block to bell housing instead of bell housing to transmission. Never had this much trouble before. It's kind of got me thinking that maybe the release bearing is stuck to the transmission input shaft. Anybody have that happen? NEED HELP! Thanks guys, will be posting more pictures as soon as I get them loaded up! ...Joe

I've been at that level of frustration before...

My first thought is the transmission input shaft is in a bind.  The release bearing can wear the front bearing retainer (i.e., where it rides on the transmission).

Do you have a support under the transmission, like a floor jack?  As you pull the engine up with the hoist, use the floor jack to relieve any binding on the input shaft.

I've had to get get physical with them before (side to side, yanking forward, and prying all at the same time). The angle is key as Jason S said. Maybe you could try unbolting the motor mount off the frame so the clam shell doesn't have to go up over the mount.

Don't forget about the guide pin that is between the engine and transmission crank case, if you bind that pin enough it can act like it is something else, while in reality you just need to level out the engine and trans a little bit and pull them apart.

I called my brother this morning and asked him about this. He said to place a floor jack under the front of the transmission and raise it up very slightly because what was going on was the transmission input shaft was in a slight bind. I jacked the trans up a little, put a slight bit of pressure on the clamshell mount with a 36 in crowbar, and she popped right loose! It's out, sitting on a stand in a corner uglying up my garage now! Next on the list is to try to clean up that nasty bay some before attempting to put the 355 in there. Thanks for the replies guys! It's out!!!!!! More pictures to come!!

Ok guys, I FINALLY have made some progress lately since work has slowed down somewhat, and the hot weather broke......for now anyway. So, I squeezed in some time on this project trying to get as much done as possible. I don't have today's pictures loaded yet, but I'll get them on here as soon as time allows. I have run into yet another snag though. I went to install the A/C condenser, and it won't fit the 4 headlight radiator support that I installed. Nearest I can figure, this radiator support must be an 81-82, and my truck is an '86. No way that I can see to make it work unless I change lines, condenser, evaporator, and all. Even then, I'm not 100% sure that I could make it work. So what I may have to do is just remove the lines, and plug everything off until I can get hold of an 83-87 core support. I wasn't aware that GM changed all of this around until I got neck deep in this, and things just didn't fit together right. If there is a simple and inexpensive solution to this problem, I'm all ears! Anyway, I got as far as wiring up the left headlights, running the wiring to the horns etc. after I installed the radiator support. I had it media blasted and painted it a satin black. Really like the way that it turned out. Going to be pulling the inner fenders out one at a time and cleaning them up and repainting them as well. Then, about all I need to do is reinstall the radiator, hoses, fan shroud, battery tray, bleed out the new clutch slave cylinder, and install a new exhaust to the headers. Not much work at all! ....Joe

Starting where I left off with the last pictures......Bellhousing cleaned, painted on the outside in factory black left bare aluminum on the inside. New throw out bearing, clutch fork, and new GM pivot ball since none of the parts stores had the one that I needed!

By this point on install day I was losing daylight FAST! It was now or never, and my neighbor offered to help do the install real quick. By the time that I got the clutch all assembled though, he got company, and here I was with this thing hanging in the air! I got it in ALONE, but had to fight with it for a while to get the crankshaft and trans input shaft aligned where both of them were happy. After that, ONE HARD shove was all it took to slide her home! Notice that I didn't put the clam shell mounts on until AFTER I got the trans and engine bolted together. This made things go together much easier since they couldn't hang on the frame mounts, and wasn't too bad to go back and install afterward.

Didn't replace the A/C compressor, but it got taken apart from the brackets, cleaned up, painted and reinstalled. Had to cut a chunk off the bracket that bolts on to the exhaust manifold too. It got cleaned up and painted afterwards, then reinstalled. The power steering pump was making noise, so I bought a re-manufactured one, installed my old pulley, and put new lines on.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the compliments! It keeps me motivated! I finally got the A/C condenser to fit in the core support, and got it all bolted back in today. I don't have the lines reconnected yet, but I'll get to them later. Put my radiator on sawhorses and filled it full of vinegar before I left for work today. I heard that vinegar works pretty good to clean one out since it is a mild acid. We'll see after I let it sit for a couple of days or so! Once I get it cleaned out I'll clean the outside of it up and paint it  and the brackets before I reinstall.

Got to clean up the fan shroud too. Think I'll just give it a basic wash up with some detergent soap and see what it looks like. If I don't like how it turns out, I'm thinking about hitting it with some wax and grease remover, then scuffing it up with a Scotchbrite pad and shooting it with some of that Krylon black paint that is made for plastic. Just have to see what I've got before I make that decision. I'm still waiting on the passenger side headlight buckets that I bought off of eBay from a guy out in California last Friday. Since I live in Missouri, it seems to take a while to get anything from out there.

I'm also going to drop the inner fenders out and wash, scuff, and repaint them. I have some braided stainless steel hose covers still in the package that I bought some time back. They have blue clamp covers. Ya think I oughta put them on too while I'm at it? I'm indecisive on that part right now. I might just make this ugly old truck purty under the hood yet! The body is going to be another story. The old clear coat paint is coming off everywhere! I need the left side cab corner, rocker, etc. all cut completely out and redone from where the last guy really screwed it up, and replace both doors, front fenders, patch the passenger bed side behind the tire, straighten the left bed side, THEN it might just make a nice cruiser yet!

I already have guys at work trying to persuade me to sell, but I'm very attached to this truck, and the ONLY way I'll ever sell is if somebody were to offer me stupid money.......and I mean stupid money for it! I gave $3,500 for it bone stock 9 years ago, and I've lost track of how much I've spent on it over the years. The money doesn't matter to me much though since the enjoyment I've gotten out of this ugly old square makes it all worth it. .....Joe

Ran into a set back. When I hooked the battery up, the wire that goes from that plastic block on the firewall to the fusible link melted in two! I tried to track down and see what is going on here, but  the only thing I can find is a couple of wires that look burned at the bulk head where it plugs in to the fuse box at the firewall.  So I have no power. I replaced the fusible link with a new one and a 30 amp fuse that I got from O'Reilly. It promptly blew that 30 amp fuse right out! So, I have a short somewhere, but I'm not sure WHERE! I'm not great at electrical, and don't have the patience! I've never had ANY electrical issues with this truck until now, and I had it started once already, the day after I swapped this 355 in. So right now I'm scratching my head. Called a local guy that I know of that parts out these old trucks looking for a wiring harness. He's looking to see if he still has one. If he does, I'm just going to re-wire it and be done with it. So, as of now I'm putting off installing the radiator, shroud, hoses until I get this thing wired so that it will run again. Still really bothers me just what happened, since I had it running once, and have never had any issues like this before. All I have is just a few more pictures of the inner fenders painted up, and the other 2 headlights after installation. .....Joe

I bought another wiring harness. I'm going to be wiring it up within the next few days and see what happens. The exhaust system is here now too. I hope I don't have any more issues so that I can finish this thing up and get it back on the road where it belongs. .....

Thanks! It has a 4 inch lift and 33s on 10 inch wide American Racing wheels.

So now that you've got all of this experience how about I bring you my 87 Suburban and let you work a little magic??  ;D

Thanks but no thanks! I've got all the fun I can handle with this one! Something went wrong in the bell housing. Looks like the clutch fork somehow came off or bent so now I get to pull the transmission/transfer case to see what happened in there. Not going to be any fun but now it looks like it's going to have to wait until spring. I've waited WAY too long to get to drive it already! I just found the video of the first startup the day after I put this engine in the chassis! My neighbor came over just as I was getting ready to start it up and that is who is talking in the video with my wife. My 9 year old shot this. That's why it's not all that great, but I really wanted to see it running in the chassis, open headers and all! ...Joe

This is first startup with the engine still sitting on the stand. I'm glad I did it this way! Had an oil leak that I had to fix. No big deal, but a lot easier to fix with it still on the stand! hope it works. ...Joe

Is this supposed to be a video? If so it won't play for me. I thought starting a engine on a stand would be unstable. How did it hold for you?
Title: Re: 355 Tested And Ready To Go In
Post by: ChaseDale3and8 on January 05, 2013, 08:04:17 pm
Im not sure what happened with that video.  Im going to try it again here and see if it works this time. As for being unstable, it jumped just a bit when it first started, but not that bad. I had it on a 4 wheel stand. I used grade 8 bolts on the stand to hold it to the engine. Made sure everything was nice and tight so it wouldn't move. Made my own wiring harness. I wouldn't want to rev it up and get crazy, but just to start it..... this method works. You do have to be careful, but I did this to show it could be done and to make sure that I wouldn't have any surprises once it was sitting in the chassis. Pulling one back out after it's in isn't one of my favorite things!  :) ...Joe

Thanks! Some of the neighbors love it, some hate it, and some are just curious! The kids think it's cool though. I've also been helping my next door neighbor with his '47 Dodge coupe powered by a 350/TH350. His at least had exhaust on when we got it running. Mine does now, but I just love the sound of open headers!  ;D ...Joe
