Title: Engine dies while in gear/when i hit the throttle.
Post by: bigdoan1 on April 22, 2012, 01:25:33 am
Hi sorry if this has already been posted. I  have a 80 Chevy k10 with a 350 and th350 trans

I installed  a edelbrock 2101 performer intake and a edelbrock 1412 carb. The truck ran great for a while after i put them on. I parked the truck for a few months to fix some wiring issues it had. I would start it up every once in a while to get the fluids moving. it never had a problem driving or running until a few days ago.

Problem: The truck runs great at idle and i can put it a wot through the linkage. When i put it into gear it still runs good until i push down the pedal more than a 1/4 of the way down it stalls out. Also when it actually wants to work i push the pedal down all the way down and it doesn't move very fast. Any suggestions of what i should look for or any ideas of what it could be?

My first suggestion would be to check the incoming fuel filter.  My second guess would be something got into the jets on the carb.  Sounds like a fuel flow problem only because you said it worked great before and after changing out the intake and carb. and at idle it is fine and at w.o.t. it moves slow.
Does the engine sound like it is starving for fuel when you are trying to drive it ?

What carburetor do you have? Check the accelerator pump.

bake74-  OK i will check the filter and look at the carb when i get the chance. If i don't touch the pedal when its in gear it doesn't die but as soon as put my foot on the pedal it just dies instantly.

VileZambonie: I have an Edelbrock 1412 performer series  carburetor. i will check the accelerator pump.

Also what i noticed is when i try to put it into gear that it sometimes doesn't lock into gear on the first try and then i have to put it in park  and select the gear i want then it works. Could this also be another problem??

That sounds for sure like a fuel flow problem, Vile's idea is better to check the incoming fuel amount while checking the filter.

Yea, that sounds like a separate issue.

Last year I had similar issues with 5 of my vehicles. They all ran perfect when I parked them but all were stumbling and running aweful when I was trying to get them ready for summer cruising. All different vehicles from an all original 50 Dodge, a 51 Chevy 3100 and all 3 ex cabs. I talked to an old friend of mine with years of experience on the older cars and he said I probably had water in the fuel. He had me pour water remover additive called Heet and try them out. All started running properly after aboit a 5 mile drive. He said the new fuels with ethenol are bad about condensing water in the tank if it sits too lomg. Its worth a try.
As far as your transmission,  doublecheck the fluid level. Every th350 i have owned leaked if they set to long. Hope this helps

Ever noticed all the cars going down the road with water dripping from the tail pipes ?

Water is a normal byproduct of combustion

Tell us more about your ignition system, your timing and whether or not you are using a vacuum advance distrbutor, if so how you hae it hooked up.

Thanks you all for your help. I figured out the problems i was having. I took off the carb and cleaned it because it had dirt in it and i had to fix the choke because it was stuck closed. My truck runs great now. Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Is your motor stock or are you running a performance setup? From what I remember a 1412 is an 800cfm carb. That's way too much for a stock motor.

I have an edlebrock performer rpm air gap intake manifold that i put in. The previous owner told me that they threw in an aftermarket comp cam and a few other goodies but I'm not entirely sure about that.

Just from experience, that seems like way too much carb. Even with a cam and an air gap manifold. A 1406 jetted right would probably give you better performance. 600-650cfm on a mildly built motor like that would be just about the perfect amount of air. You wouldn't, by chance, have access to an exhaust gas analyzer would you? My guess would be that you're running a bit lean. 800cfm is gonna need quite a bit of fuel. Just my $.02 though. :-)
