My first truck, big plans little buy little.... gonna start buy undercoating and painting the frame for rust protection then some flowmasters!
-
That is a good start on a restoration, are you going to be removing anything to do the frame or while truck is still on the frame ?
-
I would like to take the bed off, but am not sure how tough this will be? Any idea where i can get some info on taking bed off?
-
Doubt you need much info to take the bed off. Think there are 6 bolts on a shortbed. Mine all needed to be torched off due to rust but you may get lucky. Try an impact from the underneath side, remove tail lights and wiring harness, and then take screws out of the gas hole door. get 4 guys to lift up on it and take it off. Good luck, looks like an awesome project!

Might just be me, but it looks like you should do cab mounts first, it'll help with the ride, and square up your body lines.

Nice truck
-
Cab mounts? ill have to look into that... the driver side is lined up perfect while the bed on the pass side is about an inch higher than the cab, and im not sure why? i thought the bed was off a little, but im new to the truck world? im open to any help i can get!!

Ditto on checking the cab mounts.

It could be just the way he has the truck parked in the pic. You need to check the body lines on a flat level surface to see if they line up.

Well took the bed off today, my first step towards my dream truck!! Had some help but wasnt to bad. powerwashed and wirebrushed everything, truck came from arizona so for a 34 year old truck not to much rust i dont think! Going to Paint the frame with Bill Hircsch Miracle paint to protect it and then undercoat the bed with a 3m undercoat spray. Also ordered new cab mounts because they were smashed like pancakes hopefully thats why the cab and bed werent lined up. Im open to any suggestions from the more experienced guys, remember my first truck! Ill update pics as i go.... Jay PS thanks for the cab mount suggs think that might solve it.. keep ya posted

Lookin good man! Gotta love desert trucks
-
When you re-install the bed use the cab to center it up and make sure it lines up, then you can use the bed to line up the cab if you take it off to do that part of the frame.
-
I like it man! Don't change the height or tire size. looks perfect in the first 2 pics. Good luck and most of all have fun with it!
-
Thanks, i was gonna try ang go bigger but it rides so good the way it is i think ill just leave it. Started to paint the frame today heres a couple pics.
-
Nice shiny new black, gotta love it when it is parked there all pretty, that is until you start driving it and it gets dirty and covers up the shiny paint. :'(

Well got the Bed all undercoated and painted with a good rust protecter (Bill Hirsch Miracle Paint) and then covered that with 3m rubber undercoat, so the bed should be pretty well protected now. I think it came out pretty good and i was lucky there was ZERO rust or rot on it. Also switched out the old cab mounts which were destroyed (thanks to the advice i recived on here!) with new ones from and it solved the bed and cab body line problem, now the lines are lookin much better. I ordered my Flowmaster full exhaust today pics to follow....

Cab Mounts, compare body- cab lines from my pic in first post

Has anyone heard the flowmaster series 10 mufflers in person?
-
Much better on the body lines!

Mufflers are one of those gray areas where you can't rely on what any other person says. They're so speculative it isn't funny. Best thing I found is to haunt the local cruise-ins, find a car/truck you like the sound of , find out what setup they have and mufflers and copy them.
I've found most of the flowmasters sound the same tone-wise, you just pick the loudness. If you're going for true duals, they will be LOUD! on a single setup, they will be loud. I got a thrush-welded (chambered) muffler on mine. It sounds deeper than flowmasters but are just as loud and cost half as much. It's fairly loud and this is on a 2.5" single exhaust. I bet they'd scream in a good way on true duals!
I picked my muffler after seeing a blue 63 impala with those same mufflers and it sounded wicked. so I bought me one. I'll be getting the other half someday, and ill put anopther one on there to match what i have now. that impala sounded excellent.

Most set ups can sound good for less money than the flowmasters. I have holley flotech headers and a magna flow dual in/dual out muffler and love the sound. Fairly quiet for cruising speeds and loud when i get in to it. never any drone.

Hey everyone, I havent posted any updates on my truck in 3 years basically cuz it sat for a while and I had a couple kids lol, anyway the past year I have been doing a lot of work with the help of some close friends so here are some pics of the progress. It started out i was just gonna paint it but you know how that goes. Im learning a lot through the process, I have zero body or mechanical experiance but am learning from some friends. Thanks for looking.

Engine was leaking oil so I had to rip it apart having no clue what I was doing.
