Title: Vent window handles Driving me crazy
Post by: 78 Chevyrado on May 11, 2012, 05:34:09 pm
I've never had this on any other truck I've owned...

My vent window handles WILL NOT retain the little pin that holds it all together.  I dont know whats its called, but its the part you drive in to assemble the handles to the glass.  I had this problem with the locking aftermarket handles I bought way back, but now I'm having the same problem with a set of GM NOS non locking handles I have right now.   The pin keeps coming out, it came out on the passenger side the other day, and it may have been opened/closed 40 times since i rebuilt the truck.

What gives?   Never had this problem before, but it is definately a strike in the direction of me just sealing up those vent windows permanently.   I have vent windows.   I want a one piece kit, but worry about my dumbos creasing the skin when somebody slams them without any support..

\Any Ideas guys?

YEah thats it.   I can't keep them in.  They always come out and the handle gets loose, but before they come out enough to be noticable, they wring out the hole in the handle/base and get bent.

I quit using them anymore, for fear one day ill open it and the handle will just fall out on the road and be gone forever.  They are always a bit difficult to get into the hole, like they should be, but work themselves out frequently.

I never had this problem before.

Try picking up a new roll pin assortment from harbor freight. Are the spring washers installed? Use a dab of lock tight if you can't get a good fit.

Also, take a look at the rollpin groove in the pivot shaft that attaches through the glass.  The groove should be uniform.  If the groove is worn, it can catch the rollpin and walk it out of the handle.
