Title: question about vortec heads with cam
Post by: onelow84 on May 12, 2012, 07:39:22 am
I was just wondering if anyone could give me some info. I have a friend giving me a set of fresh vortec heads, the problem is I already bought a cam. I was curious what I need to do to run a .477/.480 cam with these heads. the setup i was getting ready to put together was a 600 dual feed double pump holley, performer rpm intake, comp xe268 cam with matching springs  a set of stock 1.94 heads (just old smog heads) flat top pistons and a set of 1 5/8 headers. will i be able to keep the headers also? any help is appreciated!

As long as the valve springs can handle that lift, which they should, you should be fine.............just like VileZambonie said.

You may already know it but you will need a new intake manifold for those Vortec heads.  You can't use your Performer intake that was for your old smog heads because the bolt pattern isn't the same.

thanks for the help guys, I knew I would need a new intake but I wasnt sure if the heads would be good with the lift of my cam... anyone know if I can still use the springs I bought for the old style heads with the vortecs?

Not unless the spring pockets have been increased in diameter (which is a fairly common procedure). The Vortec uses a smaller diameter spring. Lorne
