Title: hate some people
Post by: bigchevyc30 on May 14, 2012, 06:02:06 pm
well today was just lovely cause to day i went out got my truck inspected and it passed with flying colors. after this i went to 2 local tobbaco stores and then when to my old neighbors since shes getting up in the years to visit. well as i was leaving i look in my mirror to back around a corner i look at my rear wheels to make sure i dont go over the edge of the road. as i was looking i could see inside the rim and then as i went forward i couldnt see it at all so i got to looking in the mirro and there was a gap between the ribs. so i quickly put it in parks hop out to investigate. turns out someone at one of the tobacco stores had decided to loosen all 8 of the lug nuts on the driver side rear wheels. this in tern destroyed the lugs and made the lug hole really big. and i know it had to be someone since i use a good torque wrench to tighten my lugnuts down. plus all 8 of them were out at the same length and since it was on the driver side it would have be trying to tighten the lugs not loosen them

Dang that's messed up. Add one of these and they won't even come close... http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3624_Directed-508D.html

Yes its very sensitive and everything like birds, cats, and rats will set it off, but you can adjust the sensitivity to your likeing. Sorry to hear some dummy cost you a wheel. Wish you could of caught them in the act.

That sucks.  Some people are common as heck.  Good thing you caught it when you did instead of having your wheel fall off while doing 60mph.  It seems you should've heard something when traveling though.
I had a situation I was pulling my 30 foot camper trailer down the highway.  I heard some noise in my wheels but didn't think anything of it--what can I say, i live on the edge.  Well, i went to slow down around a curve and when i applied the brakes, i felt a heck of a vibration and weird sound.  PUlled over into a parking lot and looked at my wheels.  My driver's side rear wheel was nearly completely off---seems my lug nuts loosened over time and all 8 (3/4 ton sub) lug nuts had loosened and six had snapped the lugs and the two remaining lug nuts were about to come off.  Can you say a close call?  So I took knocked the six lugs that broke in half out of the hub and took three lugs out of my right rear wheel and knocked them in the driver's side so i had at least 5 lug nuts to tighten up on that wheel and five on the other rear wheel and kept on trucking.  I ordered more lugs and then it was better than new.

from now on, when i hear a noise, i check it out....it may be lug nuts loosening.

my truck didnt make any noise and i didnt notice anything it seemed normal cause atound where i live the roads are maintained horribly so the stiff suspension my truck has didnt chage at all with the wheel loose and its fun for me as im going to have to take tha axle out undo all the insides and take the drum and hub assembly to a shop with a air hammer so as they can get the stiff seated right since i cant just use the rim and nut to pull the lugs through.

Try getting some locking lug nuts, then they wont be able to take them off without the key or a big socket and hammer and a lot of noise, most people won't mess with locking lug nuts.

those lug studs will come out easier than you think.  Mine had broken flush off at the hub and I had to use a cold chisel and a 5 pound hammer to whack them out.
On the other side, to reuse three studs, i left a lug nut on them so as to not damage the threads and whacked them two or three times and out they came.  To put them back on the hub, i used my lug wrench and tightened the heck out of them when putting a lug nut on and they all pulled through.

Just wondering...What wheels did the inspection place remove to check the brakes?

Glad you're okay. I agree with locking lug nuts. Dually wheels and tires are too expensive to "disappear"

Ask at the counter.  I've got 1 broken stud to change on mine and O'Reilly's had them in stock.
