Just got a quote of 800-1200 not including the ring and pinon. I know that can't be right

Is it a posi?      If you are do-it-yourselfer get a DVD rebuild, the parts and do it much cheaper.  I have done several 9 inch Ford Traction Lok rear ends just for the price of the parts. Ring and pinion 150.00,  seals shims, gaskets 85.00, if if needs new clutches and bearings, thrust washers, maybe another 100.00.

I am a diy, but time is short. I work two jobs and just don't have the down time it would take a first timer trying not to mess up. What other years/ models will be a direct fit? I found a 84 burb that's being parted out will a diff from a burb fit?
Oh I wish it was a posi... peg leg burn outs

That is about what I was quoted a couple of years back for a 1995 C1500.  I told them they were nuts and found a parts truck for $140 which was the gas to go get it...

If you never have done it before, I suggest to find a whole axle, swap out and then tinker with your old one as time permits.  It is difficult to get it right unless you do it all the time.

Thanks for the replies guys! Money is kinda tight with my dad just passed, so I'm lookin to find another rearend. Like to find one with a posi and 3:42 gears but posi isn't nessary... so far I've found one w/o posi for $200 and with posi $500 both are from burbans from the 80s. What y'all think?

Will the rear end from a burban fit a c10? I'm thinking so but wanted to make sure. Anyone know for sure?

IF it is the same spline count you can swap the backing plates and axles...

He said id need to swap the axels. How hard is that? I'm starting to think the posi isn't a must and I should stay with the peg leg. Has anyone had a problem getting there boat up the ramp and out of the water with peg leg on these trucks? Mines a lwb if it makes a diff...

Usually $250 to $350 for gear installs if Done in the vehicle (local 4 Wheel Parts).  Small shops in smaller markets may charge much more though.  I think "Drivetrain" shops consider themselves specialty and, as a result, charge a premium.  Larger markets, like Denver, have competition.

Sorry for bumping this, but how can you easily detect a posi unit diff from the junkyard? I'm also a one-wheeled peeler (G80) and would love the posi. There are a couple trucks at the junk, is the only way to pry open the diff cover? And if so, what am I looking for?

Just got a rear end off a 87 big 10 swb for 150 :) hopefully its a posi. Idk also got the front fender silverado emblem with the 10 on top for 10 bucks. Guy screwed up the cap by tryin stick the forks in it to lift the truck so I couldn't get the solid rear window...
