Title: Squealing like a pig.

Guys,

I am new to the forum and I have an 81 C10 with a 350.  There has been a crazy squeal underneath the hood.  I replaced and tightned all the belt and still have the issue.  When driving the squealing stops once it shifts in overdrive.  I am assuming its a pulley or alt, ac, or ps pump.  Any ideas before I start replacing parts?

Inspect belts for tightness, then use a big screwdriver as a stethoscope to look for noise from alternator and other accessories.

Another thing you can do is to spray each belt/pulley with a water bottle---if the squeaks stop you've found which belt/pulley is the problem.

If all belts are tight, then it may be time for a new pulley.   You might try running steel wool at the pulley grove first to see if that helps fix it.

So the ps belt is slightly looser than the rest.  However the bracket is a tight as it will go. Any ideas?

Take your belt to the auto parts store and ask for a new belt.  When they get it out make sure its shorter than the one you have.

     Before changing parts, find out what is the cause and fix the problem, do not be one of these people who just change parts until they happen upon the problem.

I would assume the belt has stretched over time and is just worn out. You could spray belt dressing on it to confirm, or I have heard a bar of soap also works. Maybe see if you can buy a belt one size smaller if that turns out to be it. Also I would spin the pulleys by hand just to make sure they aren't rough.

You guys keep telling him to check the belts- I thought he did that and even put a new one on- maybe I mis-read it.

I've had that same squeal when my waterpump bearing was going out

I'm with 454 my water pump bearing was going out on my olds,tho didn't leak,i replaced it and the squeal was gone

Any update? Have you tried listening to the water pump to see if that is where the squeal comes from?. Another ? What do you use for fluid in the radiator and when was the last time it was flushed out or changed?
