Title: what tranny?
Post by: Farm boy on June 02, 2012, 07:10:50 pm
i am buying a 86 Chevy k10 that has been swapped from a manual to a th350 tranny and i was wondering if you guys could help me figure out what trany it might have had to begin with to make it ezer to switch back. other info is it had a 350 engine and the sifter was on the floor.

If you can at least narrow it down to two or three that would be great.

If it came with a floor shift from the factory it either was a SM 465 (granny low) first gear or the MY6 4 speed OD which is a New Process A833.  Where the floor shifter came through will tell you which one.

So are those basically interchangeable other than the hole in the floor? Also where can I get MY6 because so far I haven't been able to find one?

my6 is fairly rare to find especially in 4x4 type.  Scour the salvage yards, swap meets and eBay.

The SM 465 hole should be in the middle of the hump, while the A833 should be to the left of middle on the hump, which one does yours sound like.

i haven't went to check it out yet (2 hour trip) so i don't know. i just want to know as much as possible because the truck might have a bad tranny in it right now (th350), and I'm trying to figure out what my options are since i will be converting at some point.
