Title: GMC STREET COUPE
Post by: gwm1959 on June 03, 2012, 05:40:16 pm
I am new here and I have seen a lot of posts on this forum regarding the GMC STREET COUPE.  I owned one for about 15 years. It was a 1979 GMC Street Coupe (Sierra Grande) in the Bright Red/ Dark Carmine color combo with red interior. It was a fleet side 2 wheel drive with a 454, Turbo 400, factory aluminum wheels, Goodyear GT Radial tires, 2:73 rear axle, trailer package, front tow hooks, power windows, power door locks, bench seat, air, tilt, cruise, full gauge package with tachometer, AM/FM Cassette, dual fuel tanks and split rear window. My high school friend purchased it new off the lot at our local Saskatchewan Pontiac GMC car dealership. The truck hauled xss with that 454 and highway gears. My friend was also into Pontiac Trans Ams. He traded the truck in on a new 1981 silver Pontiac Turbo Trans Am and I was able to buy the Street Coupe back from the dealer for $9500. I had the truck until the mid 1990's when I traded it in on a new Olds Trofeo. The truck only had around 50 K on it and it was just like new inside and out. People couldn't believe it was the original paint. It was always kept inside and not driven much in winter at all. Back then I had spare NOS carpet, seat covers, stripe kits, etc. I don't have the spare parts anymore but I do have numerous color photos of truck inside and out.  I always loved this truck and I am going to start searching for it again once I get my VIN from the state DMV. I will have to scan the photos and post them at a later date.

Good luck on your search.  It is my understanding that only 304 Street Coupes made it to Canada.
If you have pictures, care to send them to me?  I have been collecting info on these and would love to share it here.

Cool story. Whereabouts in Sask was that dealer? I'm from the prairies myself. Grew up with these trucks all around me, hence the fondness to have one :)  Sounds like it would have been a great truck. I doubt that turbo T/A was as fast though ;)
