Anyone have any experience with headers and Y pipes for 84 4x4's?
I was thinking either of these-

or

Right now the exhaust shop won't build me duals because it came with a cat, and it would be unlawful in AK to build a system on a truck without a cat that came with one...thinking I may go in the direction of single to CAT(install a pipe where the cat is supposed to go) and then duals out from the cat...If this Y pipe fits, then I can fab the rest myself....
Thoughts anyone?

If you can fab everything but a Y, why not just get some collectors and fab true-duals

Why wont they install dual cats?

My thought exactly!

Who knows, I didn't really press it. I did get them to bend some pipes that kinda work. It's just all clamped together right now. When I get home I'll put a pic up of what it looks like right now.

Liability issues. Mufflers shops are responsible to stay with in smog laws just like everyone else. If the truck did not come with dual cats (federal truck) you are not suppose to install them.

What Bake74 said. If it didn't have two cats originally, you can't add them; can only do cat-back. Only possible way around this is a modification that has CARB approved parts (Alaska's requirements pretty much follow California's). You can always contact the "referree station" and ask them if what you propose to do is acceptable/legal. Some of the employees are pretty helpful. Just don't give them license plate number or driver's license number. They can use that information to flag your vehicle (in the computer) for the next inspection cycle to check for illegal mods.
Alaska emissions laws are going away soon. For now, I'd comply as cheaply as possible knowing in 6 mos or a year you can do what you want. My $.02

click the link at the top of the page. Chris has a SS duel exhaust system for sale. I'll be getting that when I get my exhaust done. it's the best setup I've seen for these trucks. and it's stainless.
I know what you mean about cats and muffler shops. Unfortunately most of them don't know the actual laws, so a lot of them won't install true duals on my 78 3/4 ton that never had a cat from the factory.
They look at the year and group it in with 1/2 tons and say i have to have cats. so stupidity is screwing me over.

That's a nice setup but appears to be for 2wd only; the OP has a 4wd.

Looks like I didnt need a Y pipe afterall. I had the shop "work" on my exhaust. They extended my pipes, made sure that they had good clearance and then dumped them down just over the rear axle. Sounds amazazing!
