what cam should i get for a 454? and what carb would be the best?

More info is needed to answer your question. For starters how is the truck going to be used? Transmission type? Rear end gear? Type of heads? Compression ratio? Fresh rebuild or just a cam upgrade? What type of intake manifold? What exhaust system is on the truck? not to mention a bunch of other things to consider...

well heres some awnsers; everything is stock except for the exaust and alls i would be using it to go to school, work, and back.

I vote for leaving the cam alone, rebuild a qjet, add headers and exhaust and cruise it. It'll get or of it's own way, and light up the tires when your right foot feels frisky.

With a cam upgrade you will probably need to replace the valve springs, might as well get a valve job done, valve guides, seals. Since you have the heads off, why not port them some to make the cam work better.
Then you question yourself on spending money on the original heads since there are a ton of new castings out there that run great right out of the box. Then you worry that the new valve job may mess with the bottom end, so you decide to re-ring the motor and put new bearings in................Snowball.
