Ok i am getting a straight 6 and 3 speed out of a 67 c10. Will the 3 speed work and all the linkages and driveshaft work in my 80?
-
No the wheel base is different (assuming both are longbeds) so the drive shaft/s won't work. The 67 probably had a coil spring rear suspension with a 2 piece drive shaft. The shifting linkages for the column 3 speeds also differ as the 80 style is very close to what the automatic is on the 1st./reverse side so it can be locked in reverse with the key out of the ignition.
-
They both are short beds and the 67 has leafs in the rear.... So what would i need?
-
Easiest way is going to be making it a floor shift 3 speed, unless you have a 3 on the tree now. You'll need to find a stick shift truck and get the pedals, firewall brace and linkages.
At this point in your project I wouldn't yet worry about it and get the rust repair done correctly. Just my .02

The transmission if it has provisions for a transmission mount is the only thing that will interchange from the older trucks.
-
So the only thing from the 67 that would be any good to me is the 3 speed it self?
-
No, the straight 6 will work if you don't need to pass any emission requirements. The bell housing usually had the mounts and the transmission just hung out there just bolted on to the bell housing.
-
OK so i just need to get the straight 6 and the 3 speed?

Sorry it was late, and I missed the motor part of your post. The motor will work as well as long as it has the casting in the block for the newer style motor mounts. As zieg said some of the older cars and trucks the motor ismounted by the bell housing, and two points near the harmonic balancer. The trans didn't have a mount. If this is how the 67 is mounted check and se if the block will accept the side motor mounts like your truck has, and see if the trans has the same mounting flange as yours.

OK i know this is off topic but i have a 78 3 speed column and i am going to get a 80 column and build a good column out of both of them. I have manuals that show diagrams, but I can not figure out if they are 3 speed columns are automatic because they do not say. What is the difference between an automatic and a manual 3-speed column??

The manual column will have 2 levers where the linkages hook up on the outside near the firewall.

How about the internals?

How about the internals?
Never had one a part but I would imagine they are quite different.

Heres a pic of the inline 6 so you can see the motor mounts...

Got to love the simplicity of the I-6
-
So you are saying that it would be a simple swap?
-
Heres a pic of the mounts i have now...

Yes you have the same blocks so everything should work. Just use the engine mounts from your old engine
-
Having the mounts on the motor is a plus, it should drop right in place unless you had a V8, in that case you will need to move the engine stand mounts to the I6 location.
-
I have a 250 inline 6 right now...
-
It should drop right in then.
-
Will the starter from my 80s motor bolt to the 67s block?
-
OK how do i make the 67s throttle linkage work on my 80?

Post a picture on how the 80 cable linkage looks...

Here ya go...

How I would do it... obtain a V-8 throttle cable and bracket off a quadrajet and fabricate the mount to work.
-
That sounds like a plane but i dont have a welder. I just need this linkage to work for now because i am going to upgrade in the future. Here is some pics of what i should have...

Any 250 I-6, 1973 on up until the integral head should be what you need...
-
Would that be better to just get the linkage i need or make my on?
-
Depends on how comfortable you feel with making it work. You don't want it to bind or stick so OEM is the "right" way to go. If you plan on a SBC in the future you will at least have the right cable. I wouldn't imagine it would take much to make it work right but the air cleaner housing has to clear as well.
-
Yea oem is prob the best way to go for me. I plane to keep the 67 inline 6 stock for a while and then swap to a 4 bb intake and headers...

Sounds cool, I always wanted to do that with a 292, just to be different.
-
Yea most guys are all for V8s and dont get me wrong I am one of them guys lol. But I thought I would give the old 6 a chance sense I never had one besides my 80 which that motor is crap lol because of the integraded head...
-
I had the 4.1L I-6 in a 79 GMC which had the integral head. Bad exhaust leak, broken bolts and what a dog but it never left me stranded. Before switching to GM for good after I got my 85C20 Scottsdale I had Fords with the 300 I-6, what a torque monster but never had a 292... Picture was taken about 1996 I think. I had the white 81 and the blue 79. The 81 was a longbed stepper but when I got it one of the fenders was rotted off of it.
-
WoW 1996 I love old pics of trucks and I was only 13 years old back then lol. I like the 79, looks like it had potential like my 80 hahaha. But yea the old 6 you just can't kill them. My 80s 250 is a good motor and the guy that had it before me drove it every where and I am sure it would go alot longer. I plan on keeping it and dropping it in a truck one day lol because I just can't bring my self to scrap it...
