Title: Frame paint
Post by: Chevy Truck Guy 86 on July 19, 2012, 02:51:28 pm
I know very little about painting. I am trying to figure out how to paint my frame, should I put expoxy primer on bare  metal, then primer on top of that and then black paint? or is there something else I should know. How should I do this?

Has it still got factory paint on it?
Does if have rusty areas?
Did you sand blast it?
If it has original paint and rusty spots, I would sand blast it and start over with A self etching primer, then paint.
Or sand the old paint and needle scale the rusty section. then use Chassis Saver over the rust, then paint it with an in expensive Acrylic Enamal equipment paint.

So if I were to use something like this! Couldni put this on, then top coat it right away, I've read online that self etching primer needs primer on top of it? http://www.eastwood.com/ew-self-etch-primer-quart-gray.html?utm_content=16009%20ZP&utm_campaign=GoogleSean02&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=Merchant-Centre&SRCCODE=1SE0756

Self etching primer is for clean bare metal only. It does no good over rust, or paint. I needle scale and pressure wash frames, then scuff up the old paint that's still adhered well. Chassis Saver the surface rust, then spray the entire thing with an inexpensive equipment acrylic enamel. Done.
When i use self etching primer I spray right over it with paint or SEM bed liner all the time. No problems.

All of the self etching primer cans I have read have said that they need a sealer over them.  I'm not sure why though???

Blazin : what do you mean by " needle scale" ?  Is this some type of process of removing rust ?

I just restored the front frame rails on my 1978 project truck using POR-15 followed with Rustoleum Hammer Black.

I'm posting videos of each project I do to a YouTube Channel I created for this truck project.

Next up we're removing the cab and the bed to finish the frame and make the custom mounts for the Dodge NP205 Transfercase.

:)

I used a kit from Eastwood with rust neutralizer, encapsulator, and a top coat. Very nice and easy seems very tough
