Hey everybody!!
Anyway im trading my 1987 chevy scottsdale 1/2ton 2wd 305tbi today away for a guys 1987 custom deluxe 3/4ton 4x4 350tbi 3sp w/ granny gear with a 6" lift, 33?" tires... LOL :P
Im pretty new to mechanical work on trucks.. I figured i could get new plugs, air filter, change the fluids, etc... But is there anything else i could do that would help? I know theres no magical way to get 30mpg ::) but is there anything i can do? maybe any tips on how to drive it since its a stick... etc etc. Will post a pic this weekend

Welcome from NW Indiana. Gas mileage is not stellar on these trucks so just take a light foot and get into high gear as soon as feasible but don't lug the engine.

i would actually look for ways to save on gas itself first---such as percentage back credit cards---some are paying 1-3%. Certain gas credit cards, such as exxon pay .15 back on each gallon.
But to answer the question, i feel we need to look at the basics. The first thing is to verify if the odometer is reading correct. Next, how exactly are we calculating mpg? Estimating generally doesn't work----we all tend to be optimistic.
Next: Is tire inflation where it should be? What temp is the engine running at? i'm thinking 200-205 might be better than 180-190. Keeping the speeds down to 55 or more should help.

Yes, drop a Cummins in it. :) Other than that, keep your speed down to about 55 mph.

Actually, i just re-read the post. The simpliest fix would be to keep the 1/2 ton and not get the 4x4 3/4 ton. This will probably cost 2-3mpg right there.

If you have an 87 you should have a TBI .That with a good tuneup and a light foot you should see at least 18 mpg.I have gotten 19.7 with my Silverado and the 350 under the hood.I put a tach in and I keep a close eye on the shift points.It makes driving these classics a lot more fun.Thanks
