Title: K20 Stock Wheel Widths
Post by: autotran77 on September 11, 2012, 12:21:02 pm
Hi,

First time poster here.  I have a stock 75 K20 4x4 8 lug currently with 16.5 wheels.  I want to put 265/75/16 tires which require a 7"-8" wheel width while maintaining the stock look of the truck by installing the stock 12" hub caps.  I spoke with wheel vintiques about their series 82 wheels but they will not accept the 12" stock chevy hub caps.  I was told they measure 11 5/8".

1)  Does anyone know for the 70's style wheel the factory rim width options for 16" wheels?  I was told the width of the 16" wheels is 6.5 which is 1/2" to narrow for this tires.  I do not want to go to the newer style chevy wheels with just the center caps.  Did they make or does someone make a 16"x8" wheel that will accept the 12" hub cap?

Thanks !

6.5" is as wide as they ever were from GM.

They'll work fine.

Here's a pic of my later wheels on my 78.  They were 6.5" wide  Tires shown are 265/75R16  Used them for years with no odd wear or anything.

I used to have some factory wheels that were 9.75 wide. There kind of rare but they are out there. If your looking for the stock look I'd go with the stockton wheels, from what ive heard they will hold stock centercaps and you can get them in a 16" wheel.

Those 9.75s still amaze me there was a wheel that wide, especially way back then...

Thanks for all the help.  I will look at Stockton wheel.  I did some more research and would a ford rim work from a E250/E350 van?  I think they are 7" and will accept the 12" chevy hub cap (go figure).  I was thinking about squeezing the 265/75/16 on a 6.5 rim but in the future I may put a lift on and go with some 35" tires so I figured get an 8" wheel now and I am good for whatever I do.

One last question.  I think I am just going with some chrome 16x8 wheels from Summit:  http://www.summitracing.com/search/Brand/U-S-Wheel/Product-Line/U-S-Wheel-75-Series-Chrome-8-Spoke-Wheels/Wheel-Diameter/16-in/Wheel-Bolt-Pattern/8-x-6-1-2-in/Wheel-Width-in/8-000-in/?Ns=Rank|Asc&autoview=SKU

My current 16.5 wheels have a 4 7/8" backspacing.   Should I get the 4.25 or 5.00 backspacing when I change to 16" wheels?   I just want to be sure everything clears when I move to 16" wheels.

 Thanks for everyone's help.

I would go with 4.25" on a 8" wide wheel.
