Title: Tranny/case swap
Post by: Magic1 on September 14, 2012, 11:45:22 pm
Got an 82 gmc Sierra 4x4 with the 350 trans and np203 case. How much trouble would it be swapping it out for a manual tranny and 205 case. What all would be needed to make it work? Thanks

Everything your automatic truck doesn't have that a standard truck does!
The brake clutch pedal bracket with pedals, clutch rod, pilot bushing, flywheel, etc. Probably have to either modify the drive shafts or get the correct ones.
You best bet is to but a complete SM465 / 205 truck and use it for the parts you need.

Ok. As far as parts go, that's what I was thinking but as far as the actual installation is it a simple bolt on ordeal or would it require a lot of fabricating?  That is, not including maybe having to modify the drive shafts.

Shouldn't be any fabricating at all.

Let me lay out the whole reason behind wanting to do the swap to begin with. The 203 case that's in the truck is shot. To rebuild it is gonna cost around 500 and worst case scenario 750 for a reman. From what I've been told that case isn't worth putting a lot of money into and I thought if I was gonna spend that much maybe I could just swap the whole setup. The only thing that sucks is that i just rebuilt the tranny in it and put a new front shaft on it.  What do you all think. Is that style of case worth saving and sticking with the tranny I've already got or would you go with a totally different setup. I've been told to go with a 700r/208 but I don't know? It's easy to make suggestions when youre spending someone else's money. Lol. Not building a rock crawler. So it's just gonna see moderate off road use. Any comments are welcome

In NH that would be about a $50 used transfer case. I would look for a different one, put a part time conversion kit into it, and keep your transmission. That would be the cheapest route and you wouldn't be tossing away the money that you spent already.

I read on the Internet today about running a twin stick on that 203 and I really like the idea of that. Think it would help because my case seems like I can only use 3 of the 5 positions on it. It'll go in h/n/l but high loc and low loc sounds like its kicked out of gear. It just kinda hums like the case is in neutral and won't move the truck. Any ideas?

Before you go any further make sure your transfer case linkage is not your issue.

If it was me I would fix the T-case.

Yeah I plan on having it looked at before I spend a dime on changing things around. That may very well be the whole problem and would be great if it is

Sounds like allot of work to change the transmission, and on top of that to swap to a standard too just because the transfer case has issues. Either get a used 203, or find a used 205 with the correct input spline count, and adaptor to bolt to your transmission.

I would love to swap for a 205 if I could find the right parts
