Title: 98 Chevy Cavalier turn signal flasher
Post by: zieg85 on September 21, 2012, 01:30:37 pm
Does the 98 have a dual purpose flasher or is there one hiding that I can't seem to locate?  The 4 way flashers work, the turn signals do not.  I can feel the flasher as it clicks but when I try the turn signals I feel the same flasher click only once if that makes sense.  Is this a dual purpose flasher or is one mounted nearby that I can't feel.  I can't get under the dash because my back is out, trying to research it out and can't find the answer.  I can tell you that all the bulbs are good and the turn signal switch switch seems to work in that when the brake lights are one you turn on the directional whatever side in back turns off as it should, just don't flash.

Yes, everything works as it should front and back...

Hmmm.   i will double check as soon as i can, but i think there's only one flasher and if so then the flasher may need to be replaced.  But i'm not 100% on the single flasher.

Thanks for checking.  I can't find any definite answer.  Auto Zone lists the same part # if you look on their website however the flashers are the same on our trucks just in different places.

Not the same symptoms as yours, but I have replaced several directional switches in this vintage Cavalier over the years.

Sorry for taking so long.  i'm not exactly sure what you mean by dual purpose flasher, but i only see/feel one sort of behind the fuse panel.

BUT i did notice there is actually a separate fuse for turn signals AND a separate fuse for the 4 way hazards.   You may want to check both fuses.

If autozone is only listing one part #, likely there is only one flasher for both functions and it's probably cheap?  May want to try replacing it if the fuses aren't the problem.

Will the signals flash if you manually move the lever up and down?

I got to reading more and it appears there is a dual purpose flasher for the 1996-2000 Cavaliers that controls both.  It was reported a new flasher fixed my exact problem as explained by someone else.  Now I have to find it.  Will keep the thread updated...

Finally changed the flasher out, what a PAIN...  Seat had to come out so I could lay under the dash.  Pulled the old one out I knew worked out of the rolled car and put it in the green one.  Works like it should...
