On my 82 Sierra when I shift into reverse or any other gear on the column it seems like I have to "fish" for the right spot for handle to lock into place if that makes sense. It doesn't just lock into place like I'd like for it to but has a lot of play and I'm wondering if the column needs replacing or if it could be fixed by adjusting or replacing the linkage on the transmission itself. It's a non tilt column if that helps.

First thing to check is the 1/2" nut holding the bracket to the transmission that the linkage goes through. Many times they come loose and that is the way they act.

Ill give it a look when I get a chance. Thanks

Check the linkage, the bushing on the frame and the shift tube.

I know the linkage is sloppy cause I've looked at it. Is there supposed to be a bushing where the linkage is attached to the frame next to the tranny cause if there is its long gone! What do you mean by the shift tube?

i had this same problem, go look at the transmission linkage underneath. right where the rod goes to the transmission, there will be a little pin, alot of times it comes out. check that first. its what happened to me. you can replace it with a nail and bend it.
