I am having my truck lowered on Friday. I wanted to know if anyone had done a 5/4 drop? I want a little bit of a rake, as well as be ready for down the road when I notch the frame for lowering even further in the rear. I am using all belltech and eibach products. I have a 1978 C-10 big 10.
Thanks for the input.

What components are you using to lower the rear? If you go with a shackle/hanger combo...you can't lower it any more than that unless you buy drop leaf springs...you will then have to notch the frame.
I would go 5/5 with the 5 in the rear via a flip kit. You can then add drop shackles later if you want it a little lower. Jeff

Not only that, if this is on your big10...you already have some rake...so a level drop (5/5 or 4/4) will allow you to keep your rake.
Also, you won't be able to buy rear drop springs and bolt them on, your big10 has longer leafs (HD). To put in the drop leafs, you will need to grind off the rivits on the rear leaf spring hangers and slide them forward to fit the standard duty springs. Make sense??
Again, I vote for flip kit.

i second the flip kit. less work down the road when you wanna go lower
-
we are using beltech and eibach producst.
front spindle, shock and spring for 5" in front
and using shock and shackles in the rear for 4".
I don't want to go too low yet, I don't have the wheels that I want, so I want to leave room for adjustment.
Doesn't the flip kit require a c-notch to get to the 6" lowered height?
Josh

Anything over 4" requires a frame notch. If you are going to drop it that low eventually, it is MUCH cheaper to do it now. Flip kits are CHEAP in comparison to all the other stuff.
If you do a shackle hanger now and later want to get it lower by using a flip kit you are going to have to remove both pieces you put on there and put the stock ones back on (keeping in mind you have to grind the rivits off for the hanger) and then get the flip on... Otherwise it will be even lower. Chris Lucas

unless you wanna do some cutting to make the 8" rear drop work
-
Ok, I made an executive decision!
We are doing the 5" in the front as before and 6" with the flip kit in the rear. This is all being done tomorrow. I will post before and after pics later.
How does the ride compare to stock? Negatives - Positives?
Thanks

get drop shocks, or you will feel it when you run over an ant.
-
It shouldn't ride much different at all. I did a 4/4 drop and couldn't tell a difference...in fact, it actually rode better.

Yes, I am using shocks. What about issues with putting a load in the truck?
-
How big a load do you plan on carrying?

I occasionally do a run to the dump, so lets say somewhere between 500- 1000 lbs
-
you reallly want a good set of drop shocks a big drop like a 5/5 will kill your stock shocks in a short amount of time and then youll be drivin a bouncy boat and djm make a flip that dosnt need a notch
-
OK, we got the front done and the rear is half way done, should be finished up tomorrow. We only ran in to 2 snags.
1- the aftermarket 15" wheels didn't fit. The lower control arm rubbed on the bottom of the wheel- actually it more than rubbed, it prevented the wheel from moving at all. So we are going back to the stock wheels for the time being, the lower control arm fits into the wheel like a key, visually you wouldn't think that the thing would work, but it does.
2 - tomorrow we'll see if the bends in the straight back exhaust are high enough to clear the rear axle - I hope they are, I don't want to have to deal with that.
Now, I just need to find a good source for my 20"-22" wheels. I am selling a bunch of the tools that I have that I never use to pay for them.

I forgot one other thing. While we had the front suspension off, we decided to replace as many bushings as possible.
We replaced the:
control arm bushings both sides top and bottom.
sway bar bushings - these were actually gone!
I believe they replaced as many of the bushing for the steering as they could. I will have a more detailed list tomorrow or monday

mine rubbed after we lowered mine to the piont the wheels would turn
kind found out after I put my nice new set of cragers on and threw it in reverse and the and my front end shutter really bad
you might just need to grind a small amount off the top outer edge
-
Ok, the lowering is complete.
It looks real mean, I really like it. But I just found out that even my stock wheels are rubbing while turning. This really puts a damper on things. I am getting the 20" wheels next week, I can't take the rubbing - it is just too dangerous.
I must say though, there is a truck here where I live that is as low as mine, but it just looks like crap. I think his problem is he has the 15" wheel and really small tires. I am sporting a set of 275 60R15 toyo proxes and they really fill up the wheel well. On the front and back the fenders are clipping the top of the tire, and it looks great.
So when the bushing were getting replace, we found out that my sway bar was missing all of its bushings -nice! After getting all the components put on, the ride is without a doubt awsome. It feels real tight, and the ride is smooth - no bouncing and it is not too hard either.
I am getting better with handling the stress of all this. I get real stressed out when I send my truck in to get work done on it. I think it is because every time I have something done that is expensive, there is always a snag. I had trouble with my motor when I got it rebuilt, then I had trouble with the suspension. I hope I don't have trouble with the wheels, please make this one an easy one.
Thanks for all the input, i will post pictures when i get them back from the photomat.

The rim is rubbing, or the tires are rubbing?

Well, the rim was rubbing, now nothing is rubbing. I replaced the wheels with 20"s this morning and all is well. I put on toyo proxes s/t 255 40R20 the wheels are 20x9 front and rear. Pictures to come soon.

Was it rubbing the LCA or the brake caliper? Typically you have to clearance either of those for 15" wheels.
How about some pics? Chris Lucas

It was rubbing the lower contral arm. Pics are coming. I bought a disposable camera and haven't used all the film yet, but they will be up soon.

This is what the truck looked like for most of its life, except for the aftermarket wheels.

Looks fantastic!! Good job.
If I may make two suggestions, ditch the big mirrors for some smaller sport mirrors, and lose the big rear bumper for a stock sport bumper...it's be perfect then IMO.
But, it is your truck and you are the one who has to be happy.
