OK last week I ordered a kick panel from chris and I removed the old one and all and started to fit the new one. Now I am having some trouble with lining it up and the fit...

Here it lines up pretty good but the bottom where the fender bolts up, will not line up and the pinch weld on the kick panel seems not to be wide enough where the the rocker goes up into the piller...

Ok here it lines up better but the bottom where the inner rocker goes sticks up passed the outer rocker...

woah seems like you have a rust problem on the truck.... the good thing about metal is that you can cut it up and bend it until it fits and just weld everything in place....
-
It being a little over isn't going to be an issue, just trim it back, BUT is the hole on the bottom lined up with the rocker hole? Is that a factory rocker? Has it been replaced. Just trying to figure out what the history is of what we are working on.
-
I would keep the door jamb, and the floor plain lined up. You can trim the under side, and you can over size that bottom fender bolt hole if need be.
-
Yea gildardo01. This 80 has alot of rust in some unusal places I would like to weld every thing but I dont have a welder I will be getting one this winter tho. I can still do a little triming but I want to be for sure that is what needs to be done. Chris as far as I know the truck still has the factory rocker and in the 5th pic the kick panel will almost line up with the rocker hole. Blazin what is a floor plain?
-
The plane of the floor metal. Where the floor would hit the kick panel if it wasn't rusted away.
-
I think Blazin is talking about the plane as in level... It looks good to me from those pics if everything is as close as you say it is.
-
Yea I am going to be making the floor pan so that will have the floor plane, mine is long gone except about an inch at the top. Anyway I have been back at it and I am still kinda lost lol. I think since I am trying to put a repo kick panel with a stock rocker is my problem but not sure. This is how it is going to have to be for now I just dont know what needs to be done...
Should I trim the peace that sticks up passed the rocker?

I lined this one up today and I think it fits the best...

That back edge where it is clamped needs to be flush, if that tang in the bottom is in the way, trim it down.
-
holy crap, and i thought i started with a rusty cab!!
-
A cab that has been drivin with that much rust is gonna be out of wack. If it was me I'd find a better cab. You'll save money by not getting a welder and patch panels. Post some pictures of the rest of the cab.
-
Most replacement panels are going to be slightly off that's just the way it is. A little persuasion and some seam sealer will make it look good as new when you're done.
-
Yea gearhead1. It has alot of rust lol. Sartobuilt what areas you need of the cab? Vile I know what you mean about these panels being off. The good news is that I fitted the kick panel best that I could and I am starting to put panels together but I am having some problems with the inner rocker fitting with the floor support and kick panel? I think it is suppost to go in between the inner rocker and kick panel?

Did you see this thread?

Yep chris I sure did. I cannot get it to line up right like it is in the pics. Every time I jack the cab up like in pic 2 and 3 then the inner rocker is to high. So I must be doing something wrong...
-
Ok a few weeks ago I ordered a slip on outter rocker from chris so I could finish my floor. Everything lineup pretty good except the rear of the rocker it has about a inch gap between the old rocker and it will not go any closer. So I am thinking that I could trim it off where is goes tight up against the rocker? Is this just a problem with the slip ons?

I have never used slip ons as they are made to cover rust not remove it. Is that what you going to do? They way the are made is bigger so it will go over. You will need to massage it to work.
-
Yea chris I am just covering up the rust for now so I can get my truck on the road. I am planing on getting another cab this summer and rebuild this one. When you say massage do mean use body hammers to get it to fit? or do you mean just work it till it fits?
-
Both
-
I think its way easier to trim a full rocker down, and make it fit that it is to beat, & bash a slip on into place!
-
Yea I thought about getting a full rocker but I did not think it was worth doing right now because I would have to cut the old one out and do more work on this cab when I am going to just replace it a little later on. I have tried to get the slip on rocker to slip on snug in the rear but it wont go and that's because the pinch welds are tight against eachother bottom and top. So that makes me think that even a hammer would not do it. I want the rear of the slip on to fit snug so I can fiber glass and bondo it so you wont even know it is there but I can't do that with a big gap there. Would it be bad to just cut it off?
Any advise is welcome...

You could certainly cut the rocker cover down to eliminate the part that doesn't fit well, but it looks like you have bigger problems. I don't see how you can attach it when there is nothing but rust all around it. I think you should sell it and get the 5 pc. cab repair or just do the cab swap. I don't see a way to make this work even for a short time. If you just had a hole in the middle of your rocker maybe.
-
If it is just a temporary fix...cut, trim, hammer & dolly, and re-weld it. That will be good practice for you.
Just go for it and test yourself some.
My $.02.

Do it right the first time, use a full rocker and cab corner.
