Post by: uwood on February 08, 2004, 10:25:00 am
does anyone know if 1981 stock gage cluster can be installed in a 1986 with dummy lights without having to modify the wiring harness?

I'm hesitant to say yes, but i think that it will work. Just swap out your sending units for ones that work with than gauge cluster and you should be good to go.

You will have to move the pins in the cluster plug to get this to work. Get a haynes manual to find the correct location of the pins.

Ahhhh, so they are indeed different? I think that I have a gauge cluster from an 83 hooked up to an 85 cab wiring harness. I remember trying to use the gauge cluster from a 78 but it required too much pin moving, while the 83 was a direct fit. I had an 81 parts truck this fall, but it is now gone so I can't check the pin orientation for you.
