Title: dash switches and sensors
Post by: lalink72 on November 09, 2012, 01:22:09 am
Hello from Texas,

I'll start out by saying that I'm a terrible mechanic, but this truck is for my 16 year old, so bear with me.
I have a 1985 Chevy C20 pickup, reg.cab, long bed, 2wd, 5.7L 350, that some one has turned an automatic to a 4 speed, floor shift transmission(what i would call a granny 4 spd. because unless your towing ya better start out in 2nd).
The main problem is they didn't take any of the automatic electrical out and not sure if they even put any of the manual stuff in(they just clipped wires).Plus they took out ECM when they put a new motor in about 14,00 miles ago(I was told!!)
What my question is,because I'm having starting and/or electrical problems, what sensors and switches do I need for the manual transmission(Neutral saftey switch, vehicle speed sensor, back up light switch, etc).
I   'm pretty much done rerunning/redoing the dash wiring,I just need to know what needs to be plugged in or not.
Any help would be gladly appreciated.

Thanks,Lance

I'm in the same predicament as you when it comes to electrical.  My advice would be for you to take some time and just figure out what goes where under the dash.  If the radio works fine, mark those wires with tape so that you can eliminate them from the process. Keep going on down the line until you at least have a general idea of what goes where.  Then you can at least start with the basics such as ensuring all the fuses work and wires aren't loose or broken.  I am attempting to fix the fan in my truck and though it isn't fixed yet, I am narrowing it down.

You don't "need" anything for the manual vs automatic.  backup light wiring would be the same except for the trans switch.  There isn't a speed sensor on an 85 truck, that wasn't in use until TBI in 87.  The neutral safety I s specific, but I disable it.  There are times I want it to crank in gear...
