After ruling out a rear main seal i now know the puddle is coming from the front of the transmission and is probably an input shaft seal? I am going to pull the transmission hopefully before the clutch gets too oil soaked. any tips? i have never pulled a transmission. Truck is an 84 with a sm465 with hydraulic clutch and a np208. just don't want to mess up anything because of a trick i didn't know. thanks for the help

probably easier to pull the engine, than to fight with the cast iron trans with transfer case.

Drain the 208 before you separate it from the transmission. Be aware that when you pull the 208 back it will want to roll. They aren't terrible heavy. The SM465 on the other hand is heavy. Be careful when you pull that out. Also put the SM465 in neutral before removing the shift lever.

Thanks fellows. I have a tranny jack so it will make it a lot easier. I appreciate the help.

Ok guys got the tranny and transfer case out today. There is gear oil all over the front of the tranny looks like the cover under the input shaft plate

Anything else i should replace while I have it out besides the clutch?

Anything else that leaks. Check the freeze plugs on the back of the motor as well.

Thanks very much

This would be a good time to check your rear main seal too.

Check the input shaft bearing retainer itself for cracks. Sometimes people torque these down too far, not realizing that it's easy to break them. Once that's done, a new one must be bought, otherwise you'll continue to have leaks.
