Title: Throw out bearing
Post by: Blazin on January 01, 2013, 12:42:20 am
Well 4 driveways from the end of my route the throwout bearing in Yellow Snow started makin all kinds of squealing / screeching noises! Will be pulling the trans. back tomorrow to swap that out!

Smart move not putting it off. Did you get it to your shop to drip off overnight?

I parked it inside Sunday night, and test drove a customers 98 Dodge 2500 4x4  home for the night. Didn't get to it yesterday, drove it home, and back today. Tore it apart, there was some carnage! Needs a new pivot ball, new arm, new nose cone, new clutch. The bearing ate right into the fingers of the pressure plate. Bearing came out in two pieces, had the cut the inner part to get it slid of the cone. I had a brand new arm in stock. I have a heavy duty clutch with about 1,000 miles on it somewhere, but do you think I can lay my eye balls on it? Heck no!

The next plow truck I build will be an automatic Vile. I have most of the pieces just need to refurb some of them, and assemble it all after painting every last piece!
It will be a combo of many years like Yellow Snow. The business of it will be 78 3/4 ton frame with some added strength in the common areas of weakness, 79 SW Dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear, TH400 freshened up, shift kit, 30,000 GVW trans cooler, with a 205. Motor will be 454, with mild cam. 73 / 74 grill, 9' Fisher plow. Or maybe a V plow if I can scratch up the dough!

Did a bunch of other stuff to it while it was layed up. When I took the slave cylinder off it was leaking, replaced that. Couple of the exhaust hangers were in need of replacement, some new outlet pipes, changed the oil in the trans, transfercase, and motor. Found the yoke on the rear end a little lose. I was going to do a new pinion seal but, need a new yoke, has some hefty wear on the seal surface. Its been seeping oil for a while now. Inner rockers had some surface rust, cleaned them up and used a spray bomb bed liner to touch them up. Put the new plow lift piston in that's been laying around for 6 months!

Nice line of fixes.  Too bad you're not closer, I know someone wanting to part with a Boss V-Plow.

If its not a Fisher it doesn't go on my trucks.  :)

Some pics of the job, and the bad parts:

Not a big fan of diaphram style clutch, but its all I could get on short notice. Would have rather had a Borg & Beck style. Have had better luck with them not slipping while plowing over the years:

Busted parts, other wise known as scrap metal!

The borg and beck is a knee popper. Did you get it bled?

You certainly squeezed the last 10 feet of use out of that clutch, fork & TO brg!

whats the difference between diaphram and borg and beck?

Its been bled, I'm just not happy with how close to the floor it engages. I have tried they way you mentioned Vile, and the pedal didn't even move the slave rod after that. I went back to the gravity bleed, it works again, but still engages close to the floor. I am going to buy a pressure bleeder. Few years ago when i replaced the slave cylinder that was the only way i could get it to bleed, and set the pedal engagement about 1/2.
I have had diaphragm style in plow trucks before and had them slip when pushing heavy wet snow, or when stuck givin some to beat it free! I have never had a Borg, and Beck style clutch slip plowing, or wheelin.
Borg and Beck pressure plate is whats in the pics of my wasted parts, 3 fingers. Diaphragm is what is in the truck now, pics of the new clutch.

Try jacking it up in the rear if you think it's still air bound. If there's no air you need a new clutch master
