Title: My 83 GMC C10
Post by: Canadian 4X4 on January 26, 2013, 06:54:42 am
I picked up this 83 shortbox its got a 350 with an A833OD behind it. I am planning on using it for a daily driver once it thaws, up here. It has dual flex lite Efans, hydraulic clutch set up, eldelbrock intake and new 650 holley carb. It needs a little bit of body work. Passenger front fender needs to be replaced and bottom of box behind the rear wheel. the red paint along the bottom of the whole truck has to go as well. I need to fix the way the battery is mounted as well. the previous owner was a diesel mechanic so he scooped up a cheap 31 series battery and put it there to get it mobile. I am undecided only colour at this point though. Interior needs to be put back together and hopefully this isnt going to be a wiring nightmare. Next winter I plan on bagging it and doing a stock floor body drop.

Not a bad start at all.  How do you like the A833 ?  I picked one up for a 4x4 that I am going to put into my 74 k10, just to try to help with mpg a little.

I havent driven it yet, it needs a little work. but im hoping it works well and i can get 15mpg if i drive normally.

Its a 5/7 drop done with belltech components, as far as i know/can tell. other than the flip kit bracket.

I fixed the flip kit that the previous owner put in. A buddy and I fixed them by cutting out some templates out of 1/4 plate with the plasma.
the original
(http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee435/canadian4x4/IMG-20130126-00220.jpg)
what we made
(http://i1227.photobucket.com/albums/ee435/canadian4x4/IMG-20130126-00221.jpg)

We also made and extension for the shifter, the original only come the the bottom of the seat, the new one is about a foot taller. its made out of 1/2 .077 tube. drilled and tapped one and and drilled the other and welded a stud in. I forgot to take pics but its much more comfortable now.

truck needs lower balljoint and outer tie rod on the drivers side, have to check the brakes and order parts monday am.

The A833 had a shorter shifter, I already know I am going to lengthen mine.

how do you plan on modifying yours? mine is pretty hacked up but it will work for now. the biggest issue we found is that to get into reverse the stick is almost under the steering wheel

I put lower balljoint and outer tierod on it today. I noticed that the back end has 2" hanger drop, 2" shackle drop and a flip kit in the back. On the front its got 2.5" drop spindles and the springs are cut so short that when the truck is on the hoist I can move the springs with my hand. We'll see how this thing rides. It still has bump stops on the lowers i think they will have to be cut off. The 235 75 15's are hitting the inners so I may have to raise it all up. I feel like there is no way this thing has a 9" drop in the back but my other truck is in storage and i cant get a measurement to compare it too. i cant get the hoist arms under the front with out a floor jack. so it has less than 4" of clearance at the front cab mount

My plan is to cut the shifter below the tunnel (hump) level, re-weld a longer shifter handle onto the stubb.  First I know I will have to measure and re-measure, it will have to be bent in a couple of places.  I was going to try to copy the stick shift off my sm465 I have now.
I won't get to that till next year though.

well it warmed up quite a bit and i decided i should come out of hibernation and get some work done. I scuffed and painted my headlight bezels with flat black tremclad (rustoleum) and wire wheeled and started to prime my core support, but i ran out of primer

Been away for a long time, truck took a turn not long after i last posted, i decided to cut it up and stock floor body drop it. here are a few of the pics I've snapped over the last couple years. hoping to have it together for the end of may but things always seem to come up. I've been saying it'll be ready for summer the last 3 years. I've moved to a new shop next door to my new house, so things should get better, more convenient to go work on it. I am in the middle of a 6 lug swap. I'm running 22" gm transit wheels. I'll try to keep this page updated

I got some more work done this weekend, had a few guys from my truck club come by and we lifted my box off and stood it up so i could weld my floor in solid. I need to add in 2 more cross braces and weld the sides on my wheel tubs. Hopefully by next weekend the box will ready to be bolted down.

got some more work done this weekend, finished welding all the braces in my box. still need to adjust my tubs I had a buddy tack them while i was under the box when it was on the truck and they aren't even. Today I started fitting my air tanks and compressors. worked out really well considering I had no idea what tanks i was getting when i built my back half. Does any one have a measurement for the street elbow they're using on their tank? i need to make sure it doesn't stick out too far and hit my frame rail. I'm going to look into a custom fuel cell that will fit in between the air tanks this week.

I got a little bit more work done this weekend, got my compressors and tanks mounted . I have decided I'm doing stainless hard line on the truck. I bent up the intake feeds to the vu4 manifold, I'm not completely happy with the outcome but it was my first try bending and they're short so i can redo them at the end. I'm using all swagelok fitting, has anyone heard of people having issues running their vu4 manifolds upside down?

Nice work.  I'm curious as to why you're swapping to six lugs.
Title: Re: My 83 GMC C10

went with 6 lug because it is difficult to find 5x5 wheels in my area. I've been waiting 3 years for detroit steel wheel to come out with their 22 and couldnt wait any long. found the 22" transit wheels cheap enough to make it feasible to just go to 6 lug
