Title: Junk yard dog
Post by: oneIwilly on January 28, 2013, 10:53:15 pm
Hi, my name is Brian, this is my 1976 Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup. Two months back my buddy says "wanna go to a auction at the junk yard", I had 600$. I said sure, grabbed my money, but didn't plan on buying anything.
We walked around for a while, I didn't find anything I really liked. I didn't think $400 would buy the truck, I say $400 because of the 200$ in auction fees. The paint, body, and interior were clean, nice rims and tires 350/400/14 bolt FF with airbags, 2wd.
So I stand there and wait for the truck. It comes up, the auction attendant starts the engine. It sounded like there is a pissed off gremlin with a ballpeen hammer in the engine compartment. I end up buying this truck, pretty much exactly how you see it for 600$. Now since I only have one wiener and one @$%^, I figured a few years ago that I didn't need 2 bathrooms in my house. So I had turned my bathroom into a engine room. Inside this room was a 350 that I had been putting together for 1.5 years. A week after I bought it, I cruzed it. I am currently installing the rear end out of a 2008 Duramax. Its the aam 11.5.(http://s2.postimage.org/rbsv7cf4p/Imported_Photos_00338.jpg)

engine. Edelbrock cam, lifters, push rods, intake manifold, and carb. Bored 20 over new alternator and hoses also. Probably would run better with headers.(http://s1.postimage.org/kw8r1j6en/Imported_Photos_00339.jpg)

It has a few cracks in the dash , but it is ok inside. Well I have been hard at it all weekend. I got the spring perches and air shock mounts moved and welded in place today. I re used the perches, and used a magnetic angle finder to match the factory pinion angle.(http://s12.postimage.org/69v7zqa8d/Imported_Photos_00354.jpg)

Heres the other side. I still need to hook up the brake lines and bleed them. Since its all chevy it should just plug in. The wet stuff on the diff is brake fluid dripping from the T(http://s18.postimage.org/j8fzocxvd/Imported_Photos_00353.jpg)

So this is what the truck looks like now. The spring perches had to both be moved in around 3 inches on both sides(http://s8.postimage.org/aro5k3jtx/Imported_Photos_00352.jpg)

The perches were about an inch taller on the duramax axle, which was cool. One thing that sucked was finding a set of lug nuts to fit. I found a guy who sold me 16 lug nuts for 50$. I cant wait to drive it and find out how it stops! Oh yeah, I also need to get a 1410 yolk welded on my drive line, that way it goes too!(http://s4.postimage.org/egobgher1/Imported_Photos_00351.jpg)

All 2008 2500 duramax trucks came with 3.73 gears unless otherwise ordered with 4.10. So I would guess probably 3.73.

Someone asked what the interior looks like, so I figured I would post pic. Nothing special. Under the seat cover the seat is a little torn up. It has an old school pull out tape deck, that has an aux input (back in the day for hand held cd players) Now can be used for I pod.Pretty cool. And a pair of 6x9s in the doors.(http://s18.postimage.org/agt2s3nqx/Imported_Photos_00355.jpg)

I met a guy who is taking the built 454s out of two of his hot rods, to replace them with small blocks, so he can afford to drive them. What is the compatibility between the small block and big block bell housings? What are the other issues to the swap. I dont really feel like taking this truck apart again, but for a built big block.......hmmmm.

Paying to drive a 454 SUCKS. Mine got like 7-9mpg and had less power then my dmax which got 17-19. I just sold mine off to swap a TBI 350 in my truck.

Sweet truck on the cover! So every resource on the internet says that all AAM 11.5 axles (they call it a 1150)will use a 1410 U joint. This is WRONG! I went to the drive line shop and looked at the book. The AAM 1150, from a 2008 takes a 1485 joint at the yolk. I hope this helps someone, it gave me a ton of trouble.

This drive line was friggin expensive. Now the truck is built front to back. Engine, trans, drive line, and axle. NO weak link. Since the Trans was replaced ( the first thing), all parts have under 1000 miles except the max axle with 23,000. Plans for the future.....nice set of brakes for the front. I have not even looked at them since I got the Truck.(http://s23.postimage.org/6g3l8auor/Imported_Photos_00361.jpg)

The truck drives great now! The ride is exactly the same as before, but now you hit the brakes and it STOPS! Im super happy with how it turned out. Total cost to do the axle swap about 800$. Free axle 0$, drive line 600$ Misc bs like grinding wheels welding gas/wire, brake fluid etc 200$(http://s24.postimage.org/i9otslqzp/Imported_Photos_00360.jpg)
