Title: Sway Bar Bushings?
Post by: Colby on January 29, 2013, 02:06:21 pm
Has anyone ever replaced the rubber bushings at the end of the sway bar where it connects to the block that goes on top of the spring pack?  Mine look terrible.

73 1/2 ton 4x4.

Thanks in advance.

The problem with rubber is that it deteriorates. There are several companies that make polyurethane replacements. In all actuality most all aging rubber should be replaced with poly. Cab bushings, sway bar bushing, spring bushings etc. Poly makes most everything feel tight again and gets rid of some of the "squish".

I agree, I bought the poly for the frame mounts, but can't find them for the ends.  Do you have a source?

I have an '85 4x4 with the sway bar mounts on top of the front axle essentially as a plate on top of the leaf spring u-bolt mounts. Is this where yours mount as well? I'm currently looking for those bushings. While most stores have the body/bar mount bushings out for you to see, the axle mounts seem to only be available for order. So I may just bite the bullet and order a couple from somewhere and see if they fit. If you find any let me know. And if I find a set that fits I'll be sure to give you a shout.

I put Energy Suspension bushings on my '77 K30's sway bar. I also changed the spring bushings on both ends of the leaf, and the shackle bushing in the frame.

Were your sway bar end bushings the solid polyurethane knuckle with the sleeve in the middle or the two polyurethane bushing ends with the sleeve that goes between? Just trying to make sure I get the right parts. Thanks in advance sir!!

This is what I used on my 86 K10 and they worked really well and aren't bad to install if you can get the bolt out (time is key at least with my rust bucket):

So these would be the same for your 73:

Hope it helps

Blazing,
I think that is exactly what I need, Thanks!  I already have the poly ones for the frame mount, but I'll buy this kit and put my other ones on Ebay or something.

I was just coming here to post this picture because I was having a hard time articulating which ones I was looking for.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

You have to order two kits.  One for the sway bar bushing kit, the other is the sway bar end link kit.  I bought mine for my 74 k10, and even from energy suspension you have to get two different kits.

Pic below is from o'reilly auto parts where I ordered mine.  That is the link kit only.

Make sure you measure the diameter of the sway bar before you order. The older 4x4s had two different size sway bars available, but mostly only on the half tons. 3/4tons almost always had the larger option.
