What the heck is this? It is attached right above the wiper switch and has some sort of tape/wire going to a bulb that mounts in the back of the instrument cluster.

That provides illumination for the wiper switch. To keep from adding more bulbs to the dash light circuit and overburdening the dimmer, the factory "piped" light from the cluster using the fiber optic ribbon.

Thanks bd, it never dawned on me that my old truck could possibly have fiber optic technology ;)

Just think, for '73 and '74 you could have fiber optics in the dash and points ignition under the hood...
