Title: 2wd to 4wd conversion
Post by: Junkman50 on February 07, 2013, 07:51:28 am
Is it possible to convert a 1987 GMC R1500 Sierra Classic 2wd to a 4wd.  I know ANYTHING is possible, but what I mean, is is feasible?  Are the frames that much different?  What problems would I encounter?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance. 8)

Generally not feasible "usually" easier to get donor frame. You need some real decent fab skills with all the right "tools" to pull it off, If this describes you then good luck and keep us posted sounds interesting.

You can see the opposite in my Thread on 4x4 to 2WD, it is an undertaking.  It it much easer to find a donor truck or frame and swap everything over.  Holes will need to be drilled and axle centerlines will need to be located.  The frame rail forms are the same, that is all....

This is my 89 4x4 to 4x2 conversion thread: http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,15648.0.html

Don't try to convert your 4x2 frame. Find a 4x4 frame and put your body over onto it.

If you do this everything is just a parts swap with the only exception being cutting the transmission tunnel out of the 4x4's cab, and welding it into the floor of the 4x2 cab.

You will be surprised how easy it actually is once the work is done.

I should add that if you don't want to weld the tunnel in, leave about 1" of sheet metal overlap in the floor (cut the floorboard hole 1" smaller than the tunnel piece) then use sheet metal screws to hold the new tunnel into the old floorboard.

If you do weld, remember to paint the exposed metal. Sheet metal screws will need a sealer between the metal overlap.

I've heard that if you go with a 2" body lift you don't have to do anything to the cab floor but I am sure someone will chime in...

     That is correct.

I was going to mention that, but if someone is looking to build a truck with stock effects then the floorboard is your only option.
