Title: Transfer case problem
Post by: 83chevycustom on February 13, 2013, 09:24:11 pm
Im not for sure what transfer case this is, but I know the most forward gear is 4L. But the 2 gears in the middle doesn't work. Ill put the truck in gear and just hear something start to spin. Anyway to identify the transfer case?

If low is all the way forward its not a 208.
Easiest way to tell a 203 from a 205 is the shifter.

205 The shifter is mounted with a single bolt to the transfer case / transmission adaptor. It pivots on this bolt when shifted back, and forth. Allot of times the bolt head will have a grease fitting in it.

203 Has a shifter assembly like a GM 4 speed transmission.

Could this be yet another case of the classic 203 with lockouts or a missing front drive shaft ?

If the truck is an '83 (I presume an '83 Chevy K10 or K20 Custom Deluxe) and the most forward position is 4L, it is most likely a NP208.

If in doubt, look under the truck at the t-case.  If the t-case is all aluminum, then it again should be a NP208.  If it is cast iron, it could be the NP205 or NP203. Following what Blazin said, look at the shifter or post a photo like pholliday1 said.

That is almost hilarious and I'd like to say that I'd notice a missing front drive shaft but now a days I have a hard time remembering my own name so I wouldn't put it past me to over look something that should be so obvious.

Oh and while you are under there look at the back of the case there should be a round tag with red writing on it. That's the ID tag it will tell you exactly what you have...if it's still there.

The most forward shifter position on all my 208s is 2 wheel drive, back one is 4 high, over to the right a bit back one more is neutral, and all the way back is 4 low.
