I want to redo my exhaust as it is manifolds, 2" pipes and glasspacks with no tail pipes, someone cut the pipes right after the rear end. I'm thinking a pair of shorties or block huggers (ceramic coated ofcourse) with 2.25" pipes with a balance pipe or x-pipe into some dynomax mufflers and either out the sides just ahead of the rear wheel openings or dumped under the bed somewhere. What would you guys suggest or recommend? Anyone have pictures of their exhausts for ideas? How difficult is building an exhaust and how much can I expect to spend? Would it be cheaper to have an exhaust shop do it?

I used the Hedman shorty headers for a Caprice and they fit easily. I then used a Pypes 2 1/2 system with an X pipe and Summit street/strip mufflers. The tailpipes exit just behind the rear tires and out to the side.
You need to know how to weld or you can clamp it all together, but I don't like all the clamps everywhere. I did use the band clamps on each end of the mufflers so I could remove the exhaust if I need.

I found some ceramic coated block huggers on craigslist for $150, but the guy wants to ship them, he's in corpus so it's quite a drive so I'm probably going to pass on those, but there is another set for 1958-1964 chevy bel air/impala/biscayne that are full length and ceramic coated (hedman) for $120 obo. But I'm not sure if those will work, would be sweet if they did

At least in Ohio, you'd be hard pressed to find an exhaust shop to do it for you because of emission laws. Last time I looked it was like a 10,000 fine to alter anything to do with emissions. (That is by a shop, many counties do not have emissions testing) Not sure if you can have it done it you replace the cats?

I saw that kit, jegs and summit also have it, price is all about the same. I don't know if I want 2.5" though, and they don't dump where I want.

The kit I used exited behind the rear wheels like factory, which is what I wanted. I used a chopsaw and did quite a bit of adjusting to make everything fit right. However, the 4x4 kits are pretty universal, so I expected as much.

I have the stock mufflers on my 305 and it goes 2" straight to two flowmaster 44s and then 3" chrome tips. I love it, purrs like a kitten at lights and idle but you put that right foot down you know its an old truck with a carb, not too old though I never get a headache driving it. I had a pic of my exhuast but the computer died, but my tips are straight out the back on either side of my hitch (not angled out the back).

I used the Flowmaster generic kit and a Jegs X-Pipe kit. The Jegs X-Pipe kit is a piece-o-crap though. All of the included mandrel bent pipes were about 5-degrees to tight so I had to run all of the tubes shallow in the expanded parts and fixture weld the whole dang thing to get it to be straight. The Flowmaster kit was perfect though.

I ran everything tight to the floor so you can't even see it except where it attaches to the header. Turned out sweet.
