Title: Camper Mirror, Frame Extension
Post by: popsthebuilder on March 02, 2013, 02:41:06 pm
Does anyone know where to find a camper mirror for a 73 c20 camper special?  Backing up, I clipped the mirror on an iron fence/ gate post. I bent the stud and shattered the glass. I think I can straighten the stud, but I need the glass for sure. Also there is an adjustable extension on the frame of this truck. I guess it is intended for additional support for campers. I don't really have any use for this. Is it ok to remove it. It would definitely loose a few pounds if I did.

If you have the style of camper mirror I have on my '79,  good luck finding a stock set.  I looked for over two years for a set and finally found a set on eBay.  They were a pair of barely used ones,  I think I got them for $60 for the pair.  You can find aftermarket replacements at most any parts store,  but they are made of plastic,  whistle in the wind,  and vibrated.

Here are the ones I recently bought....

As far as the extensions,  not really sure I can be of help.  I just have some 3/8 flat stock about 6" long to move them out far enough.

edit:  In my searching I did find brand new ones,  but I can't remember from where.  I do know they were about $150 each!

thanks for the input. The extension that I mentioned is actually part of the frame for the truck. It has nothing to do with the mirrors.

I am curious about this extension also.  Is your truck a Camper Special?  Do you know is this extension a factory thing?  If it is a factory thing I could check out my truck at give better input.

It is a camper special. I think the extension is factory but really cant be certain. If it isn't factory then it was done by the first owner a long time ago. I will attempt to post pics this evening when I get home if it isn't too dark.

It was optional on camper specials if it is what I think it is.  comes out of the frame?

Yeah, it protrudes from the rear of the frame.

They don't look too bad if you turn your monitor over...   :o

If your mirror head is like the one in KWKENUF's first photo, they were still available from GM not too many years ago. The 88- up trucks used essentially the same mirror head on the camper mirrors. The later mirror heads have set screws, so they stay in place even when you slam your doors. You might check with CaptKaos or GM about the mirror heads.

As for the bumper deal, it looks like you have the remnants of a slide out rear bumper. When a slide-in camper was installed, the bumper could be adjusted out from the truck to be able to function as a bumper with the camper installed.  When the slide-in camper was removed, the bumper could be slide back in so it wasn't sticking out 3-feet from the truck. It looks like there has been some modifications made on the back end of the frame, including welding the current bumper onto some flat steel and tubing that may be welded to the frame or possibly the slide out bumper parts...  It's hard to tell even with the monitor turned over... :P

After rotating the pictures in paint so I could see what I was looking at, I think Jason hit the nail on the head.

Slide out rear bumper, that has been modified.
